מארב למארב ארטישוק 1987
Is anyone familiar with an incident that occurred in 1987 where the Hizbollah surprised and attacked a tank + APC from the Taybe outpost on a maarav artichoke? This incident occurred a short time before the big assault on Shomria in April 1987.
From what I remember hearing, the tank was a Centurion (from 188 I presume) and that the tank commander had left the tank to crap, and although he detected the guerillas before they opened fire, he was unable to foil the attack because he had left his weapon on the tank. The infantry squad was from Givati. During this incident, the 8-Bet APC from Misayat 51 that rushed over to their assistance from Shomria, ran into a road block and took an RPG into one of the external fuel tanks, which penetrated through two sides of the fuel tank and then into the back ramp. Miraculously, only the rear gunner was lightly wounded with fragments in the leg.
As fantastic as this story seems, several months later I saw 51’s 8-bet being unloaded for the battalion exercises in Nebi Musa and it had a shiny, brand new fuel tank installed.
I am interested if anyone can shed more light on this incident or even confirm what I already wrote.
