המהומות אירעו גם במקומות אחרים בבריטניה, כביכול בגלל אלימות משטרתית, אבטלה וגזענות. למעשה, רוב הפורעים היו לבנים ולמרות שסיבותיהם הכילו גרעין של אמת, הן נופחו מעבר לכל פרופורציה.

מייקל טוען שהמהומות בצרפת אינן בהשפעת האיסלאם, אלא תוצאה של הזנחה, גזענות, אבטלה ויוהרה צרפתית. עוד הוא טוען שהפורעים חילוניים ברובם, ומתעבים דת שאוסרת עליהם לקחת סמים, לעשות סקס מזדמן, לגנוב ולשקר. הם לרוב בזים להוריהם הדתיים וצועקים ססמאות דתיות רק לגרות את התקשורת ולהתגרות בשוטרים.

The root of Paris' riots

I was 25 years old when riots erupted in London.

The most horrific occurred in my beloved Tottenham, a run-down area of North London but home to me. I still remember the October night in 1985 when a crazed mob stabbed a police officer to death and then tried to decapitate him. Their intention had been to parade with the man's head on a pole.

This was terrifying, vile, demonic stuff. The riots were in other parts of Britain as well and the alleged cause was police brutality, unemployment and racism. Actually, many of the mob were white and, as usual, most of the grievances contained elements of truth but were blown out of proportion.

I know because I was there. Which is why I've been so disgusted in recent weeks by the comments from assorted neo-conservative writers since France erupted in riots.

The beat of their thesis has been banged repeatedly on their ideological drum. The violence, they announce, is due to the influence of Islamic fundamentalism and Muslim separatism. The rioters, they insist, are motivated by religious extremism and a hatred for all things western and non-Islamic.

These explanations have come from rightist journalists in Canada, Britain and the U.S. and present cookie-cutter analyses of a profoundly complex problem. The articles are invariably accompanied by a bashing of French foreign policy and anyone who doesn't support the Iraq war.

One writer in the Chicago Sun-Times opined: "The Eurabian civil war appears to have started some years ahead of my optimistic schedule." (Eurabia, by the way, is a tendentious concept recently invented to describe the supposed attempt by Islam to conquer Europe.)

If only the world were so simple. Radical Islam is indeed a genuine and colossal problem, and the failure of a number of Muslim citizens of various European nations to adapt if not assimilate is a cause for real concern. But the riots in France have hardly anything to do with this.

Any tour of the Parisian suburbs will show just how little influence Islam has on the gangs of hoodlums who hang around street corners, form gangs and cause trouble.

They're products of neglect, racism, unemployment and French cultural arrogance. They're also often lazy, anti-social and brutish. The culture they revere -- free-market neo-cons take note -- is less that of bin Laden than of 50 Cent. Gangster rap rather than Arab rebellion.

If anything, an orthodox religious belief might help control matters. These youths are overwhelmingly secular and would despise a faith that prevents them from taking drugs, having casual sex, stealing and lying. They often have contempt for their religious parents and only shout out Islamic slogans to titillate the media and provoke police.

When we claim they are part of some Muslim uprising, we empower the authentic Islamic extremists and fail to cope with the situation at hand. And that solution is to deal harshly and relentlessly with violence but also to provide jobs and training to an increasingly lost generation.

Most ironic of all has been the argument this is the Middle East conflict translated to Europe. Ironic, because if anyone is fighting a foreign war in France, it's North American pundits who are obsessively pro-Israel and pro-George-Bush.

Anti-Semitism is definitely an issue among some French Muslims, but this is hardly relevant to the current crisis. To imply it is can only do harm to French Jews and to European attitudes towards Israel, which are seldom the caricatures described by the same journalists now explaining the riots.

Conservative with politics but liberal with truth -- not a good combination. The victims of the riots, if no one else, deserve far better.

לא כולם, נכון, אולם יש לזכור שכל טורניר בינל"א בכדורגל רק האוהדים הבריטים מעוררים חשש ומקבלים איסור לנסוע ולראות את המשחקים. משונה שעמים אחרים לא זוכים לכך. אז אם תסלח לי, אדון קורן הנכבד, הסיבה למהמות הברבריות שחזית בהן אינם מהזנחה או מצב סוציו-אקונומי קשה כי אם מתרבות בהמית של חוליגנים מתפרעים. בדיוק כמו במקרה הזה. בנוסף, מרבית הצעירים דווקא לועגים להוריהם על חילוניותם והתבוללותם. רובם פונדמנטליסטים שסבורים כי רק לאיסלם זכות קיום. לסיכום, ניתן להגיד רק דבר אחד על מאמר זה: BULLOCKS!
