The Internet is bulging with coverage of Hurricane Rita, which is forecast to hit the coast of Texas on Saturday morning. News of the storm's approach is expected to come from a host of witnesses, from bloggers to webcams, local government agencies to the hurricane forecasters of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The city government of Houston will issue information through its office of emergency management. The city has already provided a storm surge map to show where the floodwaters will rise if Hurricane Rita continues on its path. The Houston Red Cross, fresh from assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina, is laying in supplies. Chambers County, just to the east of Houston, has issued a mandatory evacuation order for its residents while the Harris County flood district, in which Houston and its port sit, is readying itself for the storm. A quick look through the twodirectories of bloggers in the Houston area reveals that most are preparing to leave the city. But a handful, including a blogger called Eric, a proudly Texan site and the suitably named Petrified Truth, seem set on seeing out the storm. There is also a proliferation of weather blogs, Dr JeffMasters, a meteorologist feted for his early and dire predictions of Hurricane Katrina, seems a good place to start. During Hurricane Katrina, the message boards of the New Orleans local newspaper and television stations proved invaluable for information about the storm. The message board of the Houston Chronicle has already started to buzz with news of traffic jams and the evacuation. The newspaper has even set up a special report site for members of the public to contribute their stories as the storm progresses. KHOU 11, Houston's local television station, is owned Belo Corporation, the same media company that owns WWL-TV, the much-praised New Orleans broadcaster that stayed on the air throughout Hurricane Katrina. Flooding is Not Near Us

Lucky for us, the flood appears to be in other areas. St. Bernard and the Lower Ninth are getting hit again. Water is flowing over the banks of the levees rapidly. This is just a disaster on disaster. When will we get a break?

We heard there was a tornado warning in E. Baton Rouge. We are about 75 miles away, or more, and should be fine. But if Rita heads more this way, we could have to deal with tornados as well. Those frigin north-eastern quadrants of hurricanes, gotta hate them for tossing off so many tornados.

We heard the sustained hurricane winds are slowing down, that is good for those west of us. But I sure hope the hurricane doesn’t start moving slower, which we heard in one report. That could mean even more torrential rain for us ? and a LOT MORE FLOODING!!

A side reflection: “Torrential” we’ve all heard like this tossed around by weather TV and radio for years on such minor storms in comparison that they have about lost their ability to carry a punch. Katrina and Rita have put things back into perspective, that is for sure.

Levees Breeched Again!

Holy #*$@! We just heard levees are being breached around the city! Flood waters are pouring in ? AGAIN!!!. We were so focused on internal preparations and catching leaks that we didn’t have time to catch the news. Donny and I checked the building and surrounding areas from the roof. Using high powered lenses we could not see any flood waters. We wanted to provide pictures. But, we could not see any flooding.

The new floods can’t be good for areas that have had power restored. We don’t see any water yet, but we’re trying to find the locations of the breaches. We are pretty high up, but after Katrina, there are a lot of unknowns.

Fire Readiness

A friend of mine in the fire department said many of the buildings that sat in the flood waters for weeks might now be weakened and susceptible to even tropical storm winds. I looked by the fire station which is a few blocks from our office and they had about 8 fire engines out in the street ready for action. Luckily they have not moved from their position. However, the lights are on for the first . Pictures of that are forthcoming. In any event there is so much debris everywhere ready to become a projectile. I was surprised to see how many surrounding buildings did not clean their roofs of debris. As a result, debris is flying off buildings. Donny was watching pieces fly off the Pan American Life building.

Can’t believe it’s another hurricane!!! Luckily, we are supposedly not going to be hit directly, but I can only imagine how many trees and other structures were weakened by Katrina
