Russian military-industrial sector is working on upgrade of avionics suite for the latest Russian Ka-52 helicopter, RIA Novosti reports with reference to Russian Helicopters Deputy CEO Andrei Shibitov

“Upgrade of the avionics suite, including radar, is a part of Ka-52 program. The upgrade is in progress,” Shibitov said. The multi-role all-weather Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopter is the two-seat version of Ka-50 Black Shark attack helicopter. It is also powered by other engines, fitted with different equipment and has different shape of its nose.

Ka-52 is powered by two upgraded VK-2500 engines having a power of 2400 h.p. each. As for its nose, it includes two-seat cockpit with state-of-the-art avionics suite. The cockpit is fitted with ejection seats.
Ka-52 may be used for a wide range of missions carried out under any lighting and weather conditions and it is able to use all the weapons used by Ka-50 vehicles. The helicopter is capable of destroying enemy tanks and low-speed aerial targets, carrying out surveillance and providing air support to the army.

Testing of Ka-52K carrier-based helicopter is scheduled for 2015

The test program of Ka-52K carrier-based scout-attack helicopter intended for Mistral helicopter carriers is on schedule, Interfax-AVN reports with reference to Russian Helicopters Deputy CEO Andrei Shibitov.

“Ka-52K project is significant contribution to increase of reliability and extension of service life as well as improvement of aircraft performance. The project will be implemented anyway, regardless of Mistrals’ fate,” Shibitov said at a press conference held at the Interfax’s headquarter. According to him, “the program is on schedule”. “State and production testing of the helicopter are scheduled for this year,” Shibitov added. He noted that in future Ka-52K carrier-based vehicles would replace some Ka-52 helicopters. “As for the ratio between the models – it will be defined by the Ministry of Defense,” he said.

Ka-52K “Katran” is the military carrier-based scout-attack helicopter derived from Ka-52 “Alligator”. However, it differs from the original Ka-52, because it is designed to be operated from a carrier. That is why the helicopter is fitted with folding wings and rotor blades, as well as air conditioning system suited for operation under high humidity conditions. Ka-52K performed its maiden flight on March 7th 2015.

The Be-200 will be able to extinguish fires on vessels at sea

By order of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, experts at KRET enterprises have upgraded the avionics of the Be-200ChS amphibious aircraft.

The multipurpose aircraft is the primary tool for extinguishing large fires. By order of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the aircraft’s avionics, central computer systems, peripheral sensors, and intelligent control panels have been improved. A new feature of the flight management system is the creation of a vertical profile and alternative flight plan, ensuring the completion of special maneuvers when conducting search and rescue and fire-fighting operations.

During the modernization process, the technical level of amphibious aircraft was improved through the use of new information display technology. The improvements to the aircraft have reduced the equipment’s weight and power consumption, improved its reliability and safety, and lessened direct operating costs for maintenance and repair.

KRET’s technical solutions have greatly expanded the functionality of the upgraded Be-200ES amphibious aircraft. Now it can be used not only to help fight large forest fires, but also to extinguish fires on oil platforms and ships at open sea and a great distance from shore. The amphibious aircraft can also conduct large-scale rescue and evacuation operations or combat modern terrorist threats.

Moscow tests final ‘nuclear triad’ element with snap mobile strategic missile drills

Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces on 1 June began a series of 50 large-scale missile regiment-level and “special tactical” exercises, lasting more than one month, Colonel Igor Egorov of the country’s Defence Ministry has announced.

The exercises involve the rapid deployment and break-out to field positions of 30 missile regiments and manoeuvring Topol, Topol-M, and Yars mobile missile systems along combat patrol routes in rugged terrain, with nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) reconnaissance crews protecting them.

About 30% of the exercises will be surprise drills, which will continue unannounced throughout the year. Close combat training with security and protection units will also take place.

Russia developing aircraft carrier with no world analogs

Russia’s defense and industrial sector is developing a promising aircraft carrier for the Navy worth up to $5.6 billion, which has no analogs in the world, Northern Fleet Commander, Admiral Vladimir Korolyov said on Monday.

The new aircraft carrier will enable the Russian Navy to operate more effectively, the admiral said, referring to the developments by the Krylov Research State Center in St. Petersburg but gave no estimates for the new ship.

The center’s developments are known under the codename Project 23000E Storm.

“Considering that the Northern Fleet forces perform a great variety of missions in the distant Oceanic zone, the presence of an aircraft carrier in the fleet in the future will help address these tasks more effectively,” the admiral said.

Currently, the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier bears the main load for the practical drills of deck-based aircraft, the commander said.

Russia to expand weaponry sales to Southeast Asia

Russia is ready to develop military and technical cooperation with new markets in Southeast Asia, Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said at an Asia-Pacific security forum on Monday.

“This effort will be facilitated by Russia’s expanding potential for the export of new armaments and the broader range of services for their after-sale maintenance and also the economic development rates and the desire of the region’s countries to diversify the sources of military hardware supplies,” the Russian deputy defense minister said.

Moscow will host an international military and technical forum, Army-2015, in June. New contracts on the supply of armaments and military hardware may be signed on the forum’s sidelines, the deputy defense minister said.

Russia counts on the active participation of Southeast Asian countries in this important event, Antonov said.

“Russia has quite large experience in military and technical cooperation with certain Southeast Asian states, such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia,” the Russian deputy defense minister said.

India-Russia move towards co-production of defence equipment

Russia and India are increasingly moving towards joint-production of military equipment, and away from a typical buyer-seller relationship, indicating a significant level of improvement and mutual trust in bilateral relation, Sushma Swaraj, India’s Minister of External Affairs said. She was speaking at a press conference on Sunday highlighting the foreign policy achievements of the Narendra Modi government’s first year in office.

“Our military-technical cooperation with Russia was based on a ‘buyer-seller’ relationship – they sold arms, and we bought them,” she said. “But this (cooperation) has now changed. Russia has decided to produce weapons in India, as well as to jointly manufacture arms with us, transferring the corresponding technologies.”

India has been increasingly seeking co-production of defence equipment and transfer of technology, including sophisticated technologies like building fighter jets, submarines, missiles and tanks, as part of the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. The defence sector is a major area in which the government hopes to make a success of manufacturing in the ‘Make in India’ programme.

Antonov State Enterprise signed contracts for delivery of An-178 aircraft to Azerbaijan and China

Silk Way Airlines (Azerbaijan) cargo carrier and Antonov State Enterprise signed a contract for delivery of 10 An-178 aircraft, LIGABiznesInform reports with reference to the Antonov General Designer, Dmitry Keeva.

Antonov State Enterprise also signed a contract with China for joint production of the aircraft. All the jets will be assembled in Kiev. The value of this contract was not unveiled. Moreover, China signed a contract for delivery of two An-178s. Average price of one An-178 jet is around $40 million.

According to Dmitry Keeva, the order backlog for An-178 aircraft stands at 100 jets. Saudi Arabia and Persian Gulf countries are interested in purchasing An-178 aircraft. The jet will be presented at Le Bourget airshow.

An-178 is a medium transport aircraft able to carry a payload of 15-18 tons. Its flight speed is 825 km/h, payload – 18 tons (equals the weight of two standard sea containers), flight altitude – 12 km, range – 5500 km. In addition, it may be operated from any airfields (including unpaved ones), that is why it is also suitable for military units. Experts believe that the jet’s price may vary from $25 to $40 million. This aircraft should replace An-12 turboprops.

An-178 aircraft performed its maiden flight

An-178 military-transport aircraft successfully performed its maiden flight. The latest product developed by Antonov design bureau (Ukraine) took off from an airfield located near Kiev on May 7th 2015, Podrobnosti.ua reports.

After spending two hours in the air the jet successfully landed at Gostomel airfield. The flight was performed despite rain and dense clouds. During the test flight visitors gathered at the airfield and watched the new jet.

An-178 was derived from An-158 passenger aircraft. Designers had to redesign the fuselage and reinforce all of its components.

The aircraft is powered by two turbofan engines developed by Progress (Zaporozhye, Ukraine). It is able to carry a payload of 18 tons inside the pressurized 16 meters long cargo compartment. The jet is also able to carry up to 70 troopers. An-178 jets should replace the outdated An-12 aircraft.

Russia reacted to information about possible sinking of Mistrals

Ex-Commander of the Northern Fleet Vyacheslav Popov commented on the information about possible sinking of Mistrals, Rosbalt reports.

“No man of a good judgment will sink such vessels, — he said. — This is a story made up to attract attention”. According to him, the vessels may either be “cut for scrap or sold to a party that needs them”. French Navy does not need such ships at the moment.

On May 6th Le Figaro reported that French authorities are considering different scenarios related to Mistral ships. The vessels will be either disassembled and disposed or sunk out at sea. The most probable scenario is connected with finding a buyer for the ships. Among potential customers are Canada, Egypt and “one of North European countries”.

The contract for delivery of two Mistral helicopter carriers was signed by DCNS (France) and Rosoboronexport in 2011. France should have handed over the first “Vladivostok” Mistral assault ship to Russian Navy on November 14th 2014. However, this never happened. Earlier President of France François Hollande said that Paris is trying to resolve the matter. Delivery of Mistrals depends on settling the Ukrainian crisis. Russia is expecting France to deliver the ships or refund money.

Russia and China are going to establish a company responsible for leasing of Sukhoi SuperJet 100 aircraft

United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC) are going to establish a joint company with China responsible for leasing of Sukhoi SuperJet 100 in China and Southeast Asia, TASS reports with reference to a source close to aircraft industry.

The partners plan to sell at least 100 SSJ100 liners via the joint company based in China over the next three years. “Agreement with China related to leasing of SSJ100 aircraft should pave the way for global expansion of Russian civil aircraft industry,” the source said.

Official representative of UAC declined to comment on the matter.

Russian experts believe that the capacity of Chinese regional aircraft market is 1,300 vehicles (for the next 20 years) and they think that Russia may well occupy a significant market share.

In 2015 SCAC started certification of SSJ100 liner in China. The source said that the project is supported by Russian and Chinese financial institutions, which should allow the new lessor to offer a competitive lease rates.

Tu-160 “White Swan” will be a deciding factor in terms of nuclear deterrence

Russia will resume production of Tu-160 “White Swan” strategic bombers developed in the Soviet era; mass production will be launched at Kazan Aviation Plant named after S.P. Gorbunov. This time the bomber will feature stealth technologies, RIA Novosti reports.

The upgraded Tu-160 bombers will offer improved aircraft performance. Radioelectronic Technologies Concern (KRET) is ready to start the production of avionics for the strategic bomber. Representatives of KRET promised to make the bomber less vulnerable to enemy air defense systems.

“In light of development of US antiballistic missile defense system the importance of ground-based and submarine-based missiles is decreasing, because the whole defense system is focused on intercepting the ballistic missiles. Thus the importance of strategic bombers increases. That is why we are paying special attention to the aviation. Unfortunately Russia fell behind in 1990s and 2000s. We were developing mobile missile systems instead of long-range aviation; however, the missile systems are vulnerable. Now we are going to focus on the long-range aviation,” president of the Academy of geopolitical problems, Leonid Ivashov, told Sputnik.

First prototype of drone of small class “Korsar” created

Experts of United Instrument-making Corporation created the first prototype of the Russian spy drone of small class “Korsar”.

Russia re-establishes tank army near Moscow

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reportedly re-established the 1st Tank Army with its headquarters at Bakovka, southwest of Moscow. The army withdrew from Germany in 1992 and disbanded in 1999.

The Moscow-based Centre for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies reported this information on 1 June. It published a photograph of a sign at the entrance to the Kalininets-based 2nd Taman Motorised Rifle Division indicating its subordination to the re-created tank army.

On 2 June, business daily Vedomosti reported that an officer from a division falling under the tank army and a MoD officer confirmed this information. The Tank Army was reportedly reformed on 13 November 2014.

Russia’s arms exports in 2014 stayed at pre-sanctions levels

Russian arms export orders have grown, actual arms deliveries abroad have decreased, yet Russia’s plans to develop and enter new arms markets has not suffered. In fact, the country has retained its long-time “honourable” second place in the global arms exports market, with a 27% share.

President Vladimir Putin said that Russia’s current portfolio of arms export orders has grown by $1 billion, and is now valued at around $50 billion. The volume of actual deliveries, compared with 2013, remains virtually unchanged, surpassing $15 billion. The value of signed contracts has, however, decreased from $18 billion to $14 billion.He spoke after chairing a meeting with the Military-Industrial (MI) Committee on Military-Technical cooperation with foreign states.

“The universality of the pistol means it can be used not only as a combat weapon for the army and police but also as a sports pistol for various class competitions,” said Aleksey Krivoruchko, CEO of the Kalashnikov Concern. “For the pistol’s different uses with aiming elements, we intend to produce variants with altered firing-mechanism characteristics and to make modifications that will allow it to be used in sports competitions.”

The pistol is uniquely less thick than its counterparts in the same class; 28 mm around the handle and 21 mm at the front nozzle. The polymer-framed double-stack PL-14 pistol and its configuration makes it possible to use the pistol with either the right or left hand, and makes it easy to wear, draw, and use. A Picatinny rail has been integrated into the pistol’s design.

Russia's Strategic Missile Forces on 1 June began a series of 50 large-scale missile regiment-level and "special tactical" exercises, lasting more than one month, Colonel Igor Egorov of the country's Defence Ministry has announced.

The exercises involve the rapid deployment and break-out to field positions of 30 missile regiments and manoeuvring Topol, Topol-M, and Yars mobile missile systems along combat patrol routes in rugged terrain, with nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) reconnaissance crews protecting them.

About 30% of the exercises will be surprise drills, which will continue unannounced throughout the year. Close combat training with security and protection units will also take place.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Brazil is apt to purchase Russian Pantsir air defense systems as early as in the first half of 2016, Brazilian Ambassador to Russia Jose Vallim Guerreiro said. “A general decision on the purchase has been made…As far as I know, the deal is expected in the first half of 2016,” Guerreiro told RIA Novosti.

In a January interview with RIA Novosti the ambassador had suggested that the contract on the delivery of Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense systems to the Latin American country could be signed in the beginning of 2015.

Guerreiro explained that this delay was mainly because “the 2015 budget did not provide enough financial resources to pay for armaments.” He added that the work is currently underway to include a corresponding provision in the 2016 budget.

The two countries launched negotiations on Pantsir deliveries in 2012.

The Pantsir-S1 (NATO reporting name SA-22 Greyhound), is a short-to-medium range gun-missile system combining a wheeled vehicle mounting a fire-control radar and electro-optical sensor, two 30-mm cannons and up to 12 57E6 radio-command guided short-range missiles. The system is designed to acquire a variety of targets flying at altitudes from five meters to 10 kilometers and at the range from 200 meters to 20 kilometers.

Russia ready to export SS-26 Iskander missile complexes to Saudi Arabia

Russia is ready to supply Iskander tactical missile complexes to Saudi Arabia, Igor Sevastyanov, a deputy director general of Russia’s state weaponry trading corporation Rosoboronexport said on Friday, July 3. Uganda could borrow more than $740 million from Russia to purchase military equipment

According to local newspaper, Ugandan Government is seeking Parliament’s approval to borrow €667 million ($740.5M) from Russia to purchase what it has identified as classified equipment for further strengthening of the military and security infrastructure. Uganda is a part of the African Union Mission to Somali (AMISOM) since 2007 with more than 6,000 troops.

Russia’s Armata to sport? (support) new heavy mortar upgrade

Russia is modernizing its 2S12 Sani 120 mm heavy mortar for use on new generation of tanks and armored vehicles.

The upgraded mortar will be installed on the next generations of the Armata, Kurganets and other platforms, Burevestnik Design Bureau chief, Georgy Zakamennykh, told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

Russia’s Ground Forces are planning a 70 percent update of their armor and weapons system by 2020 and a mass-scale purchase of Armata platforms, Bumerang armored personnel carriers, Kurganets armored vehicles and Taifun combat cars is slated for next year.

Single Center for testing drones to appear in the Urals

A single platform for testing of domestic drones will be based on the Nizhny Tagil Institute of Metal Testing, the first test is scheduled to begin before the end of the year. This was announced on Monday by the director general of the Institute Nikolai Smirnov

“Right now the flight test base (of the Institute) is undergoing a large-scale reconstruction, which will end at the end of 2015. The aerodrome is already visited by representatives of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, they approved the creation of Russia’s only center for the testing of domestic unmanned aerial vehicles. We have a good take-off and landing strip and its airspace,” said Smirnov.

New Russian 1st Tank Army unit will be equipped with T-14 Armata MBTs and Kurganets IFVs

The Russian Defense Ministry plans to create a new tank army in the Western Military District by December 1, a senior source at Russia’s General Staff has told TASS. Major-General Alexander Chaiko has been appointed commander of the 1st Tank Army. Before, he was in charge of the 20th Army. The latter’s new commander is Major-General Sergey Kuzovlyov (previously chief of staff of the 58th Combined Army).

Russia will start delivery of advanced version of S-300 air defense missile system to Iran in 2016
