Al-Mustaqbal newspaper reported in its Tuesday edition that Monday’s deployment of 10,000 Syrian troops along the northern Lebanese-Syrian border to prevent smuggling, as Damascus claimed, was only an attempt to cover them digging tunnels to siphon “100 inches of water from the Lebanese side.”
A similar attempt was made a few weeks ago in the Lebanese part of the Wadi al-Ashayer village in the caza of Rashaya. President Michel Sleiman intervened directly, however, to stop the digging, the newspaper said.
The newspaper reported that the deployment was intensified in the area facing Akkar, and that the troops were digging tunnels and building tents, especially on Dabbousieh hill.
The newspaper reported villagers saying that other positions were also reinforced in the Dilneh region facing the Nawra border village, and near Jabal Akroum and Wadi Khaled. Some locals told al-Mustaqbal that smuggling hasn’t stopped at all, and that they thought the Syrians were taking steps to counter the repercussions of the fighting that has been breaking out in North Lebanon and to stop “fundamentalist groups” from crossing over the border.
