When I was in the sadir in 85, I also heard that during the 1982 war that the rarnatistim in Golani operated with loaded magazines filled with live rounds with only the top round a blank for launching the rifle grenade
However, I was never a rarnatist myself and I don’t remember what was the actual practice on operational duty in the Lebanon security zone during that time.
But I can agree that the practice of mixing live and blank ammunition is very risky. A few years ago, I wrote about an old army experience of mine

In the beginning of intifada 1 my unit was sent to a village near Bet Lechem to disperse a violent riot. I was first in line and as I spotted rocks being thrown at us from behind a house I recklessly charged forward. As I turned the corner there were 5 or 6 men, masked and holding clubs & axes. I instinctively pointed my rifle and shot at the two guys nearest me.
Luckily for them (and maybe me) I had a rarnat gumi on the end and the first guy only got a stomach full of rubber bullets from a range of 2 meters.
He flew back into a stone wall and I jumped on top of him naively thinking "end of story he's under arrest"
However this guy had other ideas and started hitting me with his club. Because I was laying right on top of him, my rifle was stuck in between us and I couldn't use it. For the same reason his blows on my back were ineffective. I had no krav maga training but I tried punching him in the face again and again and even giving him a couple of naghot with the helmet on my head, but nothing worked. I guess he was in a craze from the fear/adrenaline. I was feeling that my strength was lessening.
After what seemed like an eternity but was probably only a minute, my friends came along to help and he got a serious team treatment. He continued trying to hit me for a few more seconds as if he couldn't feel anything, until suddenly, as if he woke up from a dream, he dropped the club and started screaming.
I would not put myself in such a situation today, however, the point of this story is that in a situation like that, when you unexpectedly find yourself very close to an enemy and for some reason you can't use your rifle, a knife could be a good backup.

What I opted to leave out of the story, was that my rifle at the time was loaded with a magazine that I filled with live ammo and with only the top three rounds blanks for launching the three rubber bullet canisters that I carried
My reasoning was that if I got surprised at close range by an Arab with a knife or gun, I didn’t want to be in the disadvantageous position of having to switch magazines. I could just cock the handle once or twice and have a live round quickly in the chamber.
Earlier, I had shot the first rubber bullet canister and now I had the second one on my barrel. When I turned the corner of the house and encountered the Arab group, I instinctly fired twice from the hip, once at each of the first two right in front of me. The second guy I shot at flew back with his arms thrown in the air and wailing. I didn’t see any wound but it was too close to possibly miss.
Luckily for both of us--he has been “hit” only by the last blank round. But I never stopped to think when I pulled the trigger, I acted instinctively, like I had been trained. Had this been the last gumi canister or if I had loaded one less blank round, it would have been a very real wound
So needless to say, mixing live and blank rounds in the same magazine can indeed be very risky
