“The implementation of these contracts will result in the delivery of over 600 brand-new and over 1,500 overhauled weapon systems to the Russian military, along with the delivery of munitions and laying the scientific and technological groundwork required for the development of advanced equipment,” Krivoruchko said.

Army 2018 Tests began in Russia of guided ammunition for 2S38 Derivatsiya air defense system

Army 2018: Kalashnikov unveils latest AK assault rifle

On 21 August, the first day of the Army 2018 defence show being held in Kubinka near Moscow until 26 August, a new Kalashnikov assault rifle chambered for the 7.62×51 mm NATO round was unveiled to the public. This most recent addition to the latest generation of the Kalashnikov family of rifles has been designated as the AK-308.

The military 7.62×51 mm round has been derived from the commercial .308 cartridge for .308 Winchester chambered AK-pattern semi-automatic rifles of the Saiga series, designated as the Saiga-308, which have been available on the civilian market for over a decade.

On 20 August, the eve of the AK-308’s official launch at Army-2018, the Kalashnikov Concern website showed a promotional video accompanied by an article on the AK-308. The AK-308 rifle featured in the video was of the AK-200 series pattern which was most likely an earlier prototype. The AK-200 series was originally designated as the AK-100M series until earlier in 2018, when it was rebranded.

The AK-308 prototype unveiled at Army 2018 is of the latest AK-12/15 family pattern, with a number of distinct features related to the heavier and more powerful 7.62×51 mm NATO cartridge it is chambered for. Unlike the AK-12 and AK-15 assault rifles, chambered for 5.45×39 mm and 7.62×39 mm rounds, respectively, the front portion of the AK-308’s receiver was modified to accommodate the heavier front barrel trunnion as per Kalashnikov’s RPK, RPK-74, and RPK-16 light machine gun series. Furthermore, the exhibited AK-308 prototype had a distinctive combined compensator and flash-hider attached to its muzzle.

KUBINKA, August 21. /TASS/. Russian Helicopters Group (part of the state-run hi-tech corporation Rostec) has demonstrated the upgraded Mil Mi-28NE ‘Night Hunter’ attack helicopter at the Army-2018 international military and technical forum, the company’s press office said on Tuesday.

The modernized Mi-28NE is on display at the forum’s static exposition. The ‘Night Hunter’ is armed with new Khrizantema anti-tank missiles and the two-channel guidance system. These missiles will make it possible to increase the range of striking the armor to 10 km. The helicopter is also furnished with modernized Ataka laser-guided missiles and features a possibility to use air bombs with a weight of up to 500 kg, the rotorcraft maker said.

Also, "the new Mi-28NE is provided with an option to interact with unmanned aerial vehicles and control them remotely, for which purpose the helicopter is equipped with special communications systems," the company’s press office said.

The helicopter’s engine and blades have also been modernized to increase their capacity and improve the chopper’s performance in high mountainous terrain and in a hot climate. The upgrade has increased the helicopter’s cruising speed and expanded its capabilities for performing aerobatic maneuvers.

"The helicopter has been furnished with new armament that will increase its firepower while the expansion of the sphere of its application will evoke still greater demand for it on the world market," Aviation Cluster Industrial Director at the state hi-tech corporation Rostec Anatoly Serdyukov said.

Russian Helicopters Group CEO Andrei Boginsky has said that the direction of developing the Mi-28 project was suggested by the experience of using helicopters of this type in combat operations.

"The modernization work has considerably expanded the Mi-28NE capabilities and opened up new prospects for export deliveries," the chief executive said.

The Mi-28N attack helicopter (the Mi-28NE as its export version) is designated to provide fire support for forward land troops, motorized infantry and armored units. The ‘Night Hunter’ features enhanced armor. It is characterized by increased combat survivability and is armed with the modern weapons suite of guided and unguided armament. As its advantages, the helicopter is resistant to combat damage, which is achieved through the use of the most advanced materials and design solutions.

Rostec’s Russian Helicopters holding has developed a common standard for Mi-24 modernisation, a company representative told Jane’s at the Army 2018 defence exhibition being held in Kubinka near Moscow on 21–26 August.

“In an effort to reduce the large number of Mi-24 upgrades, we have developed a common standard designated the Mi-35P. It is in fact a less expensive variant of the Mi-35M combat helicopter,” the representative said.

The Mi-35P has received the OPS-24N-1L with a third generation long-wave matrix thermal imager, TV camera, and laser rangefinder. The upgraded gunship’s cockpit has the KNEI-24E-1 flight navigation system with multifunctional displays. The PKV-8-35 digital flight system increases the helicopter’s maneuverability and steadiness. “The modernised gunship is also fitted with the updated PrVK-24-2 targeting system, which allows the use of 9M127-1 Ataka-VM anti-tank guided missiles [ATGMs],” the representative added.

The helicopter has also received a chin-mounted NPPU-23 turret with twin-barrel GSh-23 L automatic cannon.

A Russian aerospace industry source told Jane’s, “The helicopter has received the NPK-902V avionics suite, which considerably enhances the aircraft’s controllability and allows routes to be flown in automatic mode.”

The Mi-26T2V’s night vision-friendly cockpit is fitted with multifunctional displays, while crew protection has been increased with anti-blast seats.

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) unveiled a new lightweight shoulder-launched 60 mm guided weapon system during the Army 2018, held in Kubinka, near Moscow, from 21 to 26 August.

The FN-M multifunction missile system was developed by the Shanghai Academy of Space Flight Technology, a CASC subsidiary.

The weapon is integrated with a small sighting system and features a miniature TV sensor integrated into the nose that is locked onto the target before the trigger is pulled. The sight is powered by a battery behind the trigger grip.

The FN-M missile weighs 4 kg and is equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead of about 1 kg. The missile features four mid-body rectangular pop-out fins and four fins at the aft, and is propelled by a solid-propellant motor to a range of 2 km.

“The miniature fire-and-forget weapon can engage low-flying UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] and light vehicles,” an official from the company told Jane’s.

Russia for the first time publicly unveiled a serial production example of the Sosna short-range air-defence (SHORAD) system mounted on the MTLB chassis at the Army 2018 exhibition being held in Kubinka, near Moscow, on 21-26 August.

The Sosna is a point defence turret developed by Nudelmann Design Bureau, which has also been shown mounted on the BMD-4 chassis. On the MTLB chassis the complete system is known as Sosna, but on the BMD-4 chassis the complete system is known as the Ptitselov. The manufacturer has stated that the turret and the complete system are called Sosna, but also added that Sosna is the export variant and the variant in Russian service is called Bagul’nik.

The turret can be fitted to other platforms that meet customer requirements. The system has a crew of two: the driver and gunner. It is equipped with an optical sensor suite, which includes a long-range thermal camera that is used for target acquisition and fire control.

The system is armed with 12 9M340 missiles that are held in their transport-launch containers and arranged in two banks of six, one bank on either side of the turret. The missiles are of a layout similar to the 9M331 missiles used by the 2K22 Tunguska system, with their large boosters and dart-like unpowered guided missile, but use laser-beam-riding guidance and not radio-frequency control. The 38 kg missile incorporates a large high-explosive warhead with impact and proximity fuzes. Each bank of missiles can be independently elevated. The missiles have a maximum linear range of 10 km and up to 5 km in altitude. The 132 mm booster gives the missile a maximum speed of 900 m/s at burnout, after which the low-drag 72 mm dart portion flies unpowered.

Army 2018: TsNIITochMash details exoskeleton development

The TsNIITochMash design bureau, a Rostec subsidiary, unveiled its new exoskeleton during the Army 2018 show held near Moscow on 21–26 August, saying it has been tested in a combat environment.

The exoskeleton is made of lightweight carbon fiber and has a weight varying between 4 and 8 kg, depending on configuration. The manufacturer says it enables a soldier to carry a load of about 50 kg.

“During the tests, a serviceman was carrying a 15 kg backpack, an armour vest without ballistic plates, four loaded magazines, and the SR-3M compact assault rifle. His physical abilities and combat capacities were as if he had put on only protection equipment,” a designer of the exoskeleton told Jane’s . “The exoskeleton has been fully integrated with the Ratnik soldier ensemble. It is almost ready to enter serial production,” he added.

The company said the exoskeleton had been successfully tested during military operations in Syria and had been trialed by special units of Russian law enforcement agencies.

TsNIITochMash has also designed a semi-active exoskeleton designated MEP-05-3R that is currently in trials, according to the representative. “This modification is fitted with a ‘third arm’, which can carry a cargo with a weight of up to 15 kg. A soldier can easily carry a general-purpose machine gun; for instance, the Kalashnikov PKM or the Pecheneg,” he said.

"We have already held trials for the prototype of the active exoskeleton. It really enhances a serviceman’s physical abilities. For example, the tester was able to shoot from a machine-gun only with one hand and accurately hit targets," Faustov said, replying to the corresponding question.

In the near future, the active exosuit will enable soldiers to carry more combat gear and armaments, move quicker and accomplish combat objectives more effectively, the chief designer said.

The absence of a storage battery with the required characteristics still remains a major problem in creating the powered exoskeletons, but work on fine-tuning it is already in progress, he added.

Chairman of the Russian Ground Forces Military and Scientific Committee, Alexander Romanyuta said at the Army-2018 international military and technical forum that an active powered hard suit would be added to the third-generation Ratnik-3 ‘Soldier of the Future’ combat outfit by 2025, it was reported earlier that the exoskeleton prototype was made of titanium.

Russia developing exoskeleton for army engineers

Currently, the second-generation Ratnik combat gear that is being supplied to the Russian Army uses a passive mechanical exosuit without electrical motors.

Though it does not boost a serviceman’s physical abilities, it eases the locomotive load when carrying heavy items.

That means that the weight is spread across the structural elements from the shoulder hanger for a backpack of up to 50 kg through a waist fixture and the exoskeleton components along the legs to the support pads in the footwear.

Rostec showcased for the first time its BMP-1AM ‘Basurmanin’ during a firepower demonstration at the Army 2018 International Military-Technical Forum held in Russia.

The upgraded vehicle addresses most of the weaknesses inherent in the BMP-1 design, and includes a 30 mm cannon as well as an anti-tank weapon, a more powerful engine, and modern mission systems.

The BMP-1AM is armed with the BPPU-1 Modular Weapon System that originally equipped the BTR-80A and BTR-82A.


The BPPU-1 is armed with a 2A72 30 mm cannon and 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun, and the former enables the BMP-1AM to engage armoured targets at a range of 2,000 m.

“Even though the Tornado-G rockets are a continuity of the 500-series Grad rockets, there are significant design changes - especially in terms of the rocket motor and warhead,” an official from the company told Jane’s . “These rockets now have a much longer warhead section, without increasing the overall length [of the missile]: this is possible due to a reduced propulsion section. Thus, this gives a significant increase in firepower, albeit at a lower range capability.”

The Tornado-G 9M538 HE Frag [high explosive, fragmentation] rocket is slightly shorter at 2.64 m when compared to the earlier 9M521 HE Frag (2.84 m in total length); although the warhead section is increased to 1 m in length. The total weight of both rockets is, at 70 kg, roughly similar, although the weight of the Tornado-G HE warhead is 34.5 kg in contrast to 21 kg of the former. The range of Tornado-G MLRS firing these rockets is up to 20 km, less than the 30–40 km range achieved by the ‘500-series’ Grad rockets, but is actually equal to the even earlier 9M22 series.

Similar design changes have been made to the 9M539 HE fragmentation rocket and the 9M541 submunitions rocket. The 9M539 has a larger warhead that separates from the motor section and descends on to the target under a small parachute. A proximity fuze enables the spread of preformed and naturally-formed fragments in a circular pattern around the burst point and greatly improves lethality. The 9M541 ‘cargo’ rocket now has 70 dual-purpose HE/high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) submunitions instead of the previous 45.

The Military-Industrial Company (VPK) is displaying the upgraded Tigr 4x4 armoured vehicle at the Army 2018 defence show in Kubinka, near Moscow, on 21-26 August. The upgrade is based on combat experience gained during operations in Syria

Designated the ASN 233115 Tigr-M SpN, the upgraded vehicle is intended for reconnaissance, escort, patrol, and fire support missions. The ASN 233115 has a monocoque welded three-door hull, providing Level 1 STANAG 4569 protection against 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm steel core bullets. The vehicle, which has a laden weight of 7,932 kg, can carry up to six fully equipped soldiers and has a useful payload of 1,200 kg.

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 22 August that it had signed a contract for 59 Taifun 4×4 mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles at the Army 2018 defence show in Kubinka near Moscow. The vehicles, the variant of which was not disclosed, will be delivered up to the end of 2020.

Russian company Remdiesel is continuing development of the K-53949 Taifun-K MRAP family, which is intended for land forces. Remdiesel told Jane's at Army 2018, “The Taifun family now comprises two more vehicles: a self-propelled anti-tank guided missile (SPATGM) system and a medevac version. Like the Kornet-EM system, our new SPATGM version is armed with eight ready-to-launch Kornet-D anti-tank guided missiles mounted on two separate masts.” The SPATGM version has a laden weight of 16,000 kg and a maximum speed of 105 km/h.

The medevac version using the K-53949 chassis is named Linza. “Linza can transport up to 10 wounded soldiers,” Remdiesel said. “The vehicle is almost ready for serial production.”

The company added that it is also expanding its K-4386 Taifun-VDV family, which is being developed for the airborne troops (VDV) under a contract with the Russian MoD.

“Remdiesel has developed the second generation of the K-4386 vehicle, which is intended for the VDV,” the company said. “The upgraded platform has an independent spring suspension and less expensive electronics.”

Russia’s upgraded T-90 tank outshines its predecessor in combat efficiency

"In 2019, the Russian Army will get the first batch of heavily modernized T-90M tanks in the amount of several dozen vehicles," the source said.

A contract on the delivery of the T-90M heavily modernized tanks to the troops was signed between the Defense Ministry and Uralvagonzavod armor manufacturer at the Army-2017 international military and technical forum.

The T-90M tank was furnished with the new engine and equipment and with the latest version of the Relikt explosive reactive armor

As was reported earlier, this year, the Russian troops are expected to receive a battalion set of T-90M tanks.

As Uralvagonzavod earlier told TASS, the upgraded T-90M tank considerably surpassed its predecessor, the T-90A, by its combat efficiency during the Zapad-2017 strategic drills.

The Army-2018 international military and technical forum runs in Kubinka outside Moscow on August 21-26.

A total of 132 airborne infantry fighting vehicles BMD-4M and 58 BTR-MDM Rakushka armored personnel carriers will be delivered before 2020. The Shipunov will also repair 67 BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles in 2019-2020

Army 2018: Zaslon Center Displayed MLRS Sel

At the Army-2018 forum, ZASLON Science &Technology Center presented the full-scale sample of the new 80-mm versatile unguided rocket system named Sel, the company’s head designer Artyom Prokofiev told Mil.Press Today.

Sel is a highly-mobile short-range multiple launch rocket system. It includes transportation, rocket installation, target aiming, and launching facilities. The full-size sample is mounted on the UAZ Cargo pickup, though being compatible with a wide range of chassis

The system is designed for destruction of enemy’s manpower and light-armored vehicles in open terrain and inside fortifications, mine-laying, target acquisition, smoke screening, passive jamming (using special rockets), and battlefield illumination (using star projectiles).

Coverage range of MLRS Sel is up to 6 km. The system includes four 10-barrel modules. The fire is performed by 80-mm S-8 unguided rockets. They are widely used in different armies worldwide and proved themselves in warfare.

Although Kurganets-family armored vehicles were presented at the previous Army forums, this year the real sample of the infantry fighting vehicle based on the Kurganets-25 tracked platform will be shown for the first time, says the manufacturer, JSC Tractor Plants.

The IFV features the remotely-controlled multipurpose combat module with the 30-mm automatic gun 2A42 with selective ammo supply option (500 shells), the 7.62-mm machinegun PKTM (2,000 rounds) and two coupled MANPADS Cornet launchers. The combat module can be controlled either by the gunner or by the crew commander. Moreover, the operator needs only to perform target acquisition, the computer then will automatically track and fire at a target until its destruction. The military will obtain IFV Kurganets for operational trials in 2019.

Army 2018: Main Battle Tank T- 72B3 with Upgraded Engine

The tank’s latest version, T-72B3 will be presented by Uralvagonzavod. Basic difference from the predecessors is the new engine V-92S2F, producing 1,130 hp against 840 hp of V-84-1 that previously powered these tanks.

The engine was designed literally ‘from scratch’ based on the "analysis of tank biathlon games", an informed insider in defense industry told Mil.Press Today. All T-72B3 tanks will be further modernized under state contracts and handed to the military in this configuration.

The renewed T-72B3 attended the military parade on May 9, 2018, but the tank will be demonstrated at defense exhibitions for the first time.

The tank is armed with the 125-mm gun and two machineguns for destruction of enemy manpower and low-altitude air targets. Also, T-72B3 is equipped with reactive armor Relict, gear shifting robot, digital display and rearview camera.

KUBINKA /Moscow Region/, August 24. /TASS/. Russia’s state arms seller Rosoboronexport has signed 15 contracts worth over 20.3 billion rubles ($300 million) with foreign customers at the Army-2018 international military and technical forum, the Rosoboronexport press office reported on Friday.

As the press office said, Rosoboronexport signed "15 various contractual documents with foreign customers of Russian military hardware and armament."

"The sum of the export contracts signed by Rosoboronexport on the sidelines of the Army forum has topped 20.3 billion rubles. This relates to modern land forces’ military hardware, unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare systems, close combat weapons and many other items. The company’s order book now includes firm orders from Asian and African countries, and also from member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States," Rosoboronexport CEO Alexander Mikheyev was quoted by the press office as saying. Also, several agreements were signed on interaction with Russian companies engaged in military and technical cooperation.

The Russian armed forces are receiving the new 2B25 82 mm silenced mortars developed by the Burevestnik institute of Rostec’s Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) Corporation, a military source told Jane’s at the Army 2018 defence show being held in Kubinka near Moscow from 21-26 August.

“The Ministry of Defence [MoD] is acquiring new towed and man-portable mortars for the land troops. In particular, the special forces are slated for receiving several dozen 2B25 silenced mortars,” the source said. “The 2B25’s noise level does not exceed that of a Kalashnikov AKMB assault rifle fitted with the PBS-1 silencer. The mortar produces almost no muzzle flash or smoke

Mortar 82mm 2B25

The 2B25 weighs approximately 13 kg and can be transported in a single backpack by the operator. The mortar’s baseline ammunition comprises four 3VO35 82 mm high-explosive fragmentation (HE-Frag) mortar shells that are carried in another backpack by the loader.

The 2B25 has a maximum rate of fire of 15 rounds per minute and a combat readiness time of no more than 30 seconds. Its elevation angle varies between 45° and 85°.

“Owing to the use of steel balls as fragments, the effectiveness of the 3VO35 is almost equal to that of the 3VO26 HE-Frag 82 mm mortar shell, which is used by the 2B24 towed mortar,” the source said. The 3V035 round weighs 3.3 kg, including a 1.9 kg warhead, and has a muzzle velocity of 122 m/s.

In the baseline configuration, the 2B25 is fitted with the MPM-44M panoramic mortar sight.
