Elbit Systems receives $45M order from European country for communication systems

The Israeli company Elbit Systems Ltd. announced on August 5 that it was awarded an approximately $45 million contract from an undisclosed European country for the supply of military communications systems. The contract will be performed over a two-year period.

קסדת האפ-35. באדיבות אלביט מערכות

לפי פרסום של Rockwell Collins, הקסדה הראשונה של האפ-35, הHMDS, נמסרה היום ללוקהיד מרטין. הקסדה מפותחת על ידי אלביט מערכות ורוקוול קולינס במסגרת שת"פ תחת השם Rockwell Collins ESA Vision Systems.

"הביקור היום היה הזדמנות להציב דגש על רוקוול קולינס, כאשר הייצור מהווה חלק חשוב של הכלכלה שלנו כאן באיווה", אמר הסנטור ארנסט. "לאחר ששירתתי בצבא במשך 20 שנים, אני מעריך את המאמצים של החברה לתמיכה בהגנה הלאומית שלנו, הכוחות המזוינים שלנו והוותיקים שלנו".

הקסדה מדור 3, כוללת מצלמה משופרת לראיית הלילה, תצוגת גביש נוזלי משופרת, שיפורי יישור ותוכנה אוטומטיים והיא תוצג לצי בייצור ראשוני נמוך בשנת 2016. במסגרת שלב LRIP 7 של הזמנת המטוסים, לוקהיד מרטין תספק 24 מטוסי F-35A CTOL עוד 7 מטוסי F-35B STOVL ו4 מטוסי F-35C CV (מקור). רוקוול קולינס ואלביט פיתחו גם את דור 2 של הקסדה שטייסי F-35 משתמשים בה כיום. עד היום נבנו כ200 קסדות עבור טייסי האפ-35, כך לפי הדיווח.

עוד בעניין. לאחרונה הסתיימה פרשה משפטית בין חברת תאלס לממשלת ארה"ב ולוקהיד מרטין סביב הפרת פטנטים, לכאורה, בקסדת הHMDS. פרשה שהחלה ביוני, 2014. חברת Plaintiff Thales Visionix, חברת בת של Thales Defense & Security, טענה שהקסדה של האפ-35 מפרה פטנטים שלה בהקשר מערכת עקיבה אינרציאלית בקסדה (inertial trackers mounted). נזכיר שהקסדה של אלביט מאפשרת לטיס להסתכל לאן שהוא רוצה במרחב, ועדיין לשלוט על כל כלי הנשק של המטוס, גם ביחס למטרות שלא נמצאות בקו הראיה שלו. בדגמים קודמים, הטייס היה צריך להסתכל על המטרה כדי לירות עליה, מגבלה שהוסרה באפ-35.

לפי התביעה, מדובר בפטנט שהגישה תאלס בשנת 2000 בהקשר ליחסיות המטרה מול הפלטפורמה ולא מול כדור הארץ. השופט קבע שמדובר במתמטיקה מופשטת שמחשבת אוריינטציה בין שתי מטרות נעות, ושבמקרה זה לא עומדת להמצאה הגנה של פטנט. המהלך של תאלס נובע כנראה מתוך רצון לחסום את אלביט ורוקוול בפרויקט האפ-35 של לוקהיד מרטין. לאחרונה רכשה תאלס את יצרנית הקסדות Gentex שמייצרת קסדה מסוג HMD למטוס ההרקולס, אפ-16 והA-10. לקסדה החדשה של תאלס קוראים TopMax והיא מתחרה בקסדה של אלביט ורוקוול קולינס.

Elbit Systems to Supply More DIRCMs to European, Asian Customers

Elbit Systems Ltd. announced today that it recently was awarded two contracts for its MUSIC family of Directed Infra-Red Countermeasures (DIRCM) airborne multi-spectral self-protection systems, protecting aircraft and helicopters against air-to-air missiles (AAM) and infra-red guided Man Portable Air Defense missiles (MANPADS).

One of the orders, received from a NATO member European country, calls for the supply of C-MUSIC systems for an unspecified platform. “This new contract with the European NATO member country extends the number of platforms that will be equipped with our systems. We see a growing global demand for our DIRCM systems, which we believe address a strategic need for our customers”. Elad Aharonson, General Manager of Elbit Systems ISTAR Division commented. C-MUSIC was developed by Elbit Systems as a podded version of the DIRCM, that can be installed or dismounted from an aircraft on demand. The system is operational with Israel’s airlines, protecting aircraft flying to destinations where Israeli airliners could face potential threat of MANPADS.

The other is a follow-on contract from an Asian customer, acquiring the Mini MUSIC systems for the customer’s Blackhawk helicopter fleet. This is the second order awarded by this customer this year. Elbit Systems plan to deliver both systems this year.

Elbit Systems’ MUSIC family of DIRCM systems are under contract for numerous customers worldwide including the Israeli national program for protection of the commercial fleet for platforms such as the B747, B737, B757, B767, B777 and A320; the Italian Air Force for the C130J, C27J and CSAR AW101; the KC-390 for Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force; the German Air Force’s Airbus A400; Blackhawk helicopters for Asian customers, VIP helicopters and other aircraft.

Israel Military Industries (IMI) has announced that it is now marketing its MPR-500 bomb internationally.

The weapon is already in service with the Israeli Air Force, which used it during Operation 'Protective Edge' against militants in the Gaza Strip in 2014.

The MPR-500 has the same form as a standard 500 lb-class MK 82 general purpose bomb, but with a revised warhead that is designed to reduce collateral damage and risk to nearby non-combatants, especially when used with a guidance kit such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM).

"Matched with JDAM GPS- or laser-guidance kits, the new weapon constitutes a breakthrough in airstrike capabilities," IMI said. "The new bombs are uniquely designed to hit targets hidden inside buildings by penetrating through multiple floor levels and detonating its fragmenting high-explosive warhead inside structures, thus enabling planners to target a specific floor, while leaving the rest of a building relatively safe," the company underlined.

IMI states that the MPR-500 can also penetrate over one metre of "monolithic double-reinforced concrete" and does not break up or 'jitter' during its path to the target, an issue that has surfaced with the MK 82 and heavier general purpose bombs. "Operating against such hard targets, MPR-500 offers over 90% reliability," IMI said.

The four-canister launcher has been integrated on a trailer that can be towed from light vehicles. It is the same launcher that had been procured by South Korea but in that case it will be integrated on a Ford 550 4x4 vehicle.

The system is manned by a team of two, which can operate it from a distance of 500 metres through an optic fibre. The operators can receive telemetry data along with a real-time image from the missile’s seeker, given its non-line-of-sight capability. Spike NLOS can hit targets at distances up to 25 km.

The fact that the launcher is integrated on a trailer allows the user to move it in different locations and enhance a potential target’s defensive capability. Thus it would be ideal for large bases, forward operating bases or strategic targets.

Elbit Systems is to supply its Hermes 900 UAS to an unnamed customer in the Latin American region under a contract announced on 25 September. The contract is valued at $70 million.

The customer will use the Hermes 900 integrated with an intelligence gathering system for homeland security applications.

Elbit Systems will supply the system within the next 12 months.

Elad Aharonson, general manager, Elbit Systems ISTAR Division, said: ‘Since establishing the ISTAR Division, we have witnessed a growing demand for solutions combining a range of ISTAR in-house technologies, and we are pleased to be able to supply our customers with our cutting-edge systems, creating a power multiplier.’
