VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 3, 2011) Capt. Doug Swanson, right, director of Global Network Operations at Naval Network Warfare Command (NETWARCOM), and Yeoman 2nd Class Kassiana Earp, Flag Writer for the Naval Network Warfare Command commander, cut the cake during a ceremony to commemorate the 96th birthday of the U.S. Navy Reserve Component. The ceremony was held at the Navy Cyber Forces and NETWARCOM headquarters at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story. Swanson and Earp represented the reserve component as the oldest and youngest reservists assigned to the two commands.

Boxer is the flagship of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, which is underway with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (13th MEU) for a deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.

Makin Island is conducting training exercises off the coast of California in preparation for an upcoming deployment.

(March 4, 2011) Master-at-Arms Seaman Quentin Benjamin, assigned to Naval Support Activity Washington, helps a Special Olympics bowler during the final tournament of the Special Olympics Bowling Championships held at AMF Capital Plaza Lanes in Hyattsville, Md. Naval District Washington assists the District of Columbia Special Olympics Program several times a year with various sporting events.

Erdmann performs maintenance on an electro-optical sensor unit from an advanced targeting forward-looking infrared system in the avionics shop aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). This maintenance helps aircraft drop precision bombs. Enterprise and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 are on a routine deployment conducting maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

NORFOLK (March 7, 2011) Sailors man the rails as the guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) prepares to depart Naval Station Norfolk for a six-month independent deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. Monterey will be providing the first ballistic missile defense under the European Phased Adaptive Approach.

YOKOSUKA, Japan (March 8, 2011) Lt. Kenneth Barber, from Albuquerque, N.M., speaks to nurses of the Royal Thai Armed Forces in the intensive care unit during a tour of U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka. The nurses toured the operating rooms, intensive care unit, emergency rooms and laboratory during their visit and spoke to hospital staff as part of a subject matter expert exchange.
YOKOSUKA, Japan (March 8, 2011) Sailors apply a bucket patch to a simulated ruptured bulkhead during a damage control exercise at the Yokosuka Center for Naval Engineering Firefighting and Damage Control Learning Site. The site offers Sailors hands-on training in shoring, firefighting, chemical, biological and radiological defense and pipe patching.
