AR15=M16
M16 is simply the military designation for the AR15. AR15 is the name that the original manufacturer (Armalite) called the product-- Armalite Rifle 15
Sorta like Hummer (manufacturor's name) and HUMVEE (US military name
Why 16?
Because before it there was the well known M14 and a lesser known version of the M14 built for the miklaon role, the M15, which had a heavier barrel and bipods. The M15 was never issued
I wrote this about the M designation in another thread
ציטוט:
It's pretty simple, M just stands for model and the number is probably just given sequentially. sometimes with jumps, and restarts
For example M4 Sherman was officially called something like Tank, Medium, Model 4
It came after the M3 Grant/Lee tank
After that there was the M24 Chaffee, M26 Pershing, M41 Walker Bulldog, M46, M47, M48, M60 Pattons, M70 (cancelled) and then they started over with the M1 Abrahms
I read somewhere something funny that an old guy was confused because in WW2, the US tank was the M4 and the infantry carried the M1 and today it's the opposite
