[Presenter] Israel has shown interest in a unique Georgian weapon. Designer Germane Khitalishvili's silent grenade launcher named "Mumu" was tested at the Krtsanisi military training ground five years ago. The weapon has been displayed at international exhibitions too, but no-one in Georgia has taken an interest in "Mumu". Before the unique weapon is exported to another country, it should undergo a final test. Diana Trapaidze tells you the story.
[Correspondent] Calibre - 60 millimetres; shooting range - 500 metres; the grenade launcher's weight - 5 kg; length - 450 millimetres; tone level - 20 decibels. It is "Mumu's" unique nature that is measured in decibels. A Georgian designer has created the grenade launcher whose main value is its sound, to be more exact - its lack of sound. The Georgian designer's product was dubbed the number one terrorist's dream at an exhibition in Ankara.
[Khitalishvili] The weapon was displayed in Athens and in Ankara. Much interest was taken in it at both exhibitions. Journalists in Ankara dubbed it Bin Ladin's order.
[Correspondent] Germane Khitalishvili created the grenade launcher five years ago. Georgian generals and Otar Shalikashvili [former chief advisor to the US secretary of defence on Georgian military affairs] attended its first test at the Krtsanisi training ground. Following that, the designer received only one letter from the government signed by [ex-]President Shevardnadze.
[Khitalishvili narrating the content of the letter] "Familiarize power-wielding ministers with it. I will attend the test. Signed Eduard Shevardnadze." Everything ended here. Our ministers and generals are not interested in Georgian weapons. They are interested only in purchasing, excuse me, written-off weapons.
[Correspondent] Israel has shown interest in the Georgian grenade launcher. However, Tzahal [Israeli Defence Forces] may add "Mumu" to its armoury only after it is studied and Georgia starts producing it.
[Irakli Aladashvili, editor-in-chief of the Arsenali magazine] I believe that, at this stage, the best thing would be if our Defence Ministry or Interior Ministry took an interest in this weapon, continued its further improvement together with the constructor, as I believe that any weapon needs improvement.
[Correspondent] The military journalist has been writing about "Mumu" for five years now. He understands full well why the Georgian grenade launcher is unique and explains this to every interested person.
[Aladashvili] The entire product of the explosion remains inside, here. When the ejecting force arises, the burnt gas does not come out. It remains inside and moves together with the grenade. This is why it produces almost no noise, which is probably as loud as a car signal, probably even lower, but the enemy cannot here it at a distance of 500 metres, which is the maximum distance this grenade can cover.
[Correspondent] The designer says that "Mumu" can best be used in special operations. It is necessary to launch some 70 or 80 grenades to end testing, which needs desire and about 10,000 lari. Until this is done, Bin Laden's dream will remain a piece in the Delta institute's exhibition.
