The problem with the black helmet or thick black band is, in my mind, not necessarily that the enemy sniper will use it to aim at your head but rather that it will make you easier to spot. He can then aim wherever he chooses
Black is a bad color, day or night. It is bad for boots and bad for weapons.
I think that historically, the metal parts of of weapons were either finished dark or painted so that they wouldn't reflect. The original 7_62 AR10, the predessesor of the 5_56 M16, had brown colored plastic parts to make it them look like traditional wood parts in order to satisfy the traditionalists in the military. I don't know why it was switched to black, but this definitely started a trend.
Recently, most of the new weapon models (FN SCAR, H&K XM8) proposed for replacing the M16 are appearing in a sand color Flat Dark Earth. All Canadian M16s have green plastic parts which I think work very well
I think it is very unfortunate that the current Tavor was issued in black plastic rather than the olive color of the models tested in 2000/1
Note that most Western armies today also seem to be issuing non-shiny brown boots rather than the traditional black boots
Look at the photos of the M4 with the painted furniture below and see how it blends in better with the natural surroundings
In comparison photo below, see which is easier to spot, the regular black or the painted rifle
The one on the right would have hidden even better if I dared paint the metal parts
Which stand out more the brown or black boots?
