Return to RAF maritime patrol is back

The United Kingdom today confirmed the purchase of the Boeing P-8A Poseidon multi-mission maritime aircraft (MMA). The Ministry of Defence announced it has signed a deal to purchase nine P-8As for the Royal Air Force.
The P-8 purchase had long been expected, and the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) committed to acquiring the Boeing product, replacing the RAF’s maritime surveillance capability that was lost with retirement of the Nimrod MR2.
According to an MoD statement, the new aircraft, which will be based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, ‘will play a vital role in protecting the UK’s nuclear deterrent and the UK’s two new aircraft carriers. They will also be able to locate and track hostile submarines, and will enhance the UK’s maritime search and rescue (SAR) capability.’
The MoD also emphasized the economic contribution the Poseidon order will bring to the UK, and Scotland in particular, pointing to the additional 400 personnel that will be based at RAF Lossiemouth.
Some of these personnel are already embedded in the US Navy’s P-8A program, and among them were seven personnel who arrived in the UK last week aboard a Poseidon operated by Patrol Squadron 30 (VP-30), the US Navy’s Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) — the training unit for the type.
A total of 11 RAF crew are currently assigned to VP-30 ‘Pro’s Nest’ at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. Among them are the pilot, three tactical co-ordinators (TACCO), two electronic warfare officers (EWO), and an acoustic officer who crewed the P-8A for its appearance at last week’s Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) held at RAF Fairford. Their nonstop transatlantic trip was completed on Monday, July 4, in a time of seven and a half hours. After its appearance at Fairford, the P-8A departed the Gloucestershire air base on Sunday, July 10, to take part in the Farnborough International Airshow.
