Lockheed Martin unveils new armed Black Hawk

Lockheed Martin has leveraged its Missiles and Fire Control division to develop, with its Sikorsky subsidiary, an armed version of the S-70 Black Hawk utility helicopter, which it launched at the Farnborough International Airshow 2016 during the week of 11 to 17 July.

Speaking at the event on 12 July, Bill Gostic, vice president Global Military Systems and Services outlined the philosophy behind the armed variant of the venerable transport helicopter, and how it was made possible by pooling the resources of the two newly joined companies.
"Why arm the Black Hawk? It is trusted and it is versatile," Gostic said. "The world today is unstable and budgets are tight - militaries need options, and the armed Black Hawk provides them. We believe that this is the right time for an armed Black Hawk that combines a reduction in the pilot workload with lethality and versatility."

With Sikorsky as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the Black Hawk, Lockheed Martin has brought missiles and fire control expertise to the project in terms of integrating the weapons package into the aircraft's existing flight management system. Indeed, although the two companies only formally merged in November 2015, their history of collaboration on the Black Hawk-series of helicopters goes back many years, and is most recently shown in the MH-60R Seahawk for the US Navy.

"Since the acquisition, we have been exploring synergies that might give added value to the customer," Gostic said.

In terms of the armed Black Hawk, Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky have built two testbed platforms at the PZL Swidnik factory in Poland, one of which provided the centerpiece for the former's Farnborough pavilion. As shown at the event, the platform features four tub-wing hardpoints carrying four AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles (ASMs); two 70 mm Hydra 19-shot rocket pods; and an FN Herstal 12.7 mm heavy machine gun pod (HMP).

FARNBOROUGH: Elbit unveils new jammer for UAVs

A new jamming system from Elbit Systems has been unveiled that will be able to direct threats, such as surface-to-air missiles, away from unmanned air vehicles.Elbit’s self-protection and jamming system, Light Spear, helps meet the growing demand from UAV operators attempting to collect intelligence in anti-access area denial environments.

The system thwarts an airborne threat and then assigns another aircraft, such as a fighter, to destroy the target, Shlomo Livne, Elbit’s vice-president of airborne electronic warfare business line, tells FlightGlobal. “It protects the UAV against any kind of threats and everything is done automatically,” he says.

Light Spear is based on Elbit’s Elisra, an electronic warfare defence system the company has fielded on a range of fighters, helicopters and UAVs in the Israeli air force and for other global customers. The new compact system’s small size, weight and power is designed with a UAV operation in mind, but its modularity allows the operator to field the technology on several platforms.

“It’s like Lego,” Livne said. “Everything is in one box.”

There might only be 15 F-16s remaining to be built at Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth facility in Texas, but there is still a lot of life in the fighter, the company says.

While many at Fort Worth are now focused on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Randy Howard, director F-16 business development, has a different task.

“We are taking technologies from the F-22 and F-35 and rolling it into the F-16,” he says. "The latest kid on the block is the F-16V – it’s an upgrade programme for existing F-16s and the natural next step for those existing and emerging customers of the jet." More than 3,000 F-16s remain in service, he adds.

The Northrop Grumman APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, a development of the APG-81 in the F-35, is the jewel in the F-16V’s crown. It is Northrop's fourth active electronically scanned array radar, after systems in the F-22, the United Arab Emirates' Block 60 F-16s and then for the F-35.

“It collects a lot of data, which means we have to add in a high-speed data network and a new computer system to allow the information flow into the jet’s new displays,” Howard says. “The speed and agility of the F-16 is great, but in many ways it is about information going into the cockpit – so instead of the pilot managing displays they make tactical decisions.”

The F-16V upgrade also includes a new 6 x 8" centre pedestal display, and additional operating capabilities if required, such as auto ground collision avoidance, a joint helmet-mounted cueing system, Link 16 data link, Lockheed Sniper targeting pod and conformal fuel tanks which can allow the jet to fly for more than 900 miles. There is also the option to buy more sophisticated weaponry.

According to Howard, three customers have ordered more than 300 F-16s modified to the new standard, but he is reluctant to name them.

However, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) in September 2011 outlined a $5.3 billion deal for the upgrade of 145 F-16A/Bs for Taiwan. In July 2015 the Republic of Korea Air Force awarded Lockheed a $2.5 billion contract to upgrade 134 KF-16C/Ds, after dropping a similar deal with BAE Systems. The third customer is unknown.
