Key Points
- USS Ross (DDG 71) successfully intercepted a ballistic missile above the North Atlantic during the MTMD Forum's ASD15
- The event marked the first time a SM-3 Block IA interceptor has been fired on a non-US range, and the first intercept of a ballistic missile target in the European theatre
The US Navy (USN) DDG-51 Flight I guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) has successfully intercepted a ballistic missile above the North Atlantic during the Maritime Theater Missile Defense (MTMD) Forum's At Sea Demonstration 2015 (ASD15).
Performed on 20 October in waters on the UK's Hebrides range, the event marked the first time a Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IA interceptor has been fired on a non-US range, and the first intercept of a ballistic missile target in the European theatre.
Running from 17 to 27 October, ASD15 is a UK-hosted, US-facilitated multinational demonstration of integrated air and missile defence (IAMD) capability among eight MTMD Forum members. Canada, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States all provided assets for the exercise; Germany contributed personnel to augment the forum's multinational Combined Task Group staff.
According to the USN, the intercept flight test scenario saw a short-range Terrier Orion ballistic missile surrogate launched from Hebrides Range, being in flight simultaneously with two anti-ship cruise missile targets fired at the coalition task group. Cued by an early warning sensor track from the Royal Netherlands Navy air defence and command frigate HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën , Ross fired an SM-3 Block 1A missile that successfully executed an exo-atmospheric intercept.
As part of the same IAMD scenario, USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) fired an SM-2 missile. This marked the first firing of an SM-2 missile on the Hebrides Range.
Other ASD15 milestone achievements included the first use of multinational beyond-line-of-sight link architecture for IAMD purposes in the European theatre; and the first time that partner nations (in the shape of the Netherlands and Spain) had provided BMD cues to a USN Aegis BMD guided missile destroyer
