ידיעות אחרונות 21 במרץ 1991
הממשל האמריקאי פתח בדיונים עם ישראל לבדיקת אפשרויות, שיביאו לנסיגת צה"ל מדרום לבנון.
הנושא עלה בדיונים שקיימו בוושינגטון אורי לוברני וג'ון קלי עוזר שר החוץ האמריקאי.
במקביל הורה ערפאת לא לפעול נגד ישראל מלבנון.
כחלק מהערכה מחדש באש"ף עם סיום מלחמת המפרץ וההיערכות לקראת המערכה המדינית.
ההנחיה של ערפאת לאנשיו לא לפעול מלבנון הוצאה לראשונה בשנת 1988 לאחר שערפאת הכריז בג'נבה על התמערותו מטרור. מאז ועד לימי המלחמה נגד עיראק לא פעלו אנשי הפת"ח מלבנון.
אירגונים אחרים כמו "החזית הדמוקרטית" "והחזית העממית" לא שהו להוראתו של ערפאת.
יום לפני כן כוח של גולני חיסל שלושה מחבלים שני קילומטר צפונית לזרעית.

ובמקביל גל סכינאות שוטף את הארץ, האזרחים מרגישים חסרי אונים, הממשלה שוקלת גירוש וצעדים אחרים...

היה מעניין לקרוא את הכתבה בכותרת הראשית, 25 שנה ונראה שדברים לא השתנו.

לפני 25 שנה, עירק וסוריה היו האיום העיקרי בעיקר ע"י יכולות טק"ק וחל"כ.
25 שנה אחרי ו... ושתי מדינות אלו כבר לא מהוות איום צבאי משמעותי ,
אבל לבנון ועזה הפכו לאיום משמעותי יותר מסוריה ועירק לפני 25 שנה..
מעניין מה יהייה בעוד 25 שנה..

Lebanon and Gaza are orders of magnitude less threatening than Irak and Syria were.
from number of missiles\rockerts, to manpower, to conventional military and logistics.

Israel just like the "Threat of the week" thing going on for the last 30-40 years.
The leadership in Isreal - left or right never got into the hysteria, just used it here and there for political gains.

אז רוב ההתקלויות היו של הלוחמים שתפסו קו בלבנון (כמו בכתבה בה מתוארת ההתקלות של גולני)
נכון לימים אלו רוב ההתקלויות הן של מג"ב , משטרה ואזרחים ששהו במקום במקרה.

My point in the post was that Hamas and Hizb and company are not dangerous
strategically to Israel like Syria and and Irak were.

The knife attacks were exactly like today.
I remember the one where the attacker went into a school and wounded one teenager seriously.
He was beaten up to within an inch of his life by the rest of the teenagers.
Good work.

Later in the early 90 as someone posted here (vitaman maybe?) knife attacks in hebron were treated with no live fire, and no killing.

Iraq had primitieve and limited number of scud missiles.
it did not shared a border with israel therefor its land attack capabilities as a threat to israel were slim.

Syria was indeed a major threat but it was its interest not to warm the golan border.
it was also a Severn country not an militia/proxy of other powers such as iran.

On Syria we agree.
Irak was a very powerful country untill 1990.
The Iraki force sent to help Syria in Yom-Kippur was important enough to attack,
And IRRC the threat of it caused the israeli push to stop or slow down inside Syria.
Active nuclear program untill 1980.
Huge well armed military even after the gulf war.
A stable government, and experienced people in it.
Very lucky that Irak was not on our borders.

Even after 1990, only the pressure from the US kept Irak down.

Comparing Irak under Saddam to Hizb and or Hamas and company is trying to make . Irak+Saddam look small or make Hizb+Hamas look big.

Hizb and Hamas still have time to learn things Saddam forgot. They are not in the same leage.
