Both soldiers served exemplarily in combat and at the risk of their lives in Afghanistan. They showed bravery beyond the call of duty. By doing so, they had to prove themselves in situations one cannot even imagine back home in peaceful Germany.
Bravery and exemplary service
Daniel Seibert's day of fate was on June 4 2009: His squad was ordered to reinforce a reconnaissance detail under fire. Seibert and his men marched out and took on a superior enemy. A battle broke loose in which Seibert, his own soldiers and troops of the Quick Reaction Force repelled the enemy. The 30 years old professional soldier personally led the successfull assault under enemy fire and saved his own group from certain annihilation. (muck: Ten OMF were killed)
Today MSG Seibert serves with the Combat Training Center of the Army, where soldiers are prepared for their deployments.
They risked life and health
Only three days later, on June 7, SFC Steffen Knoska was ordered to recover a damaged Dingo armoured personnel carrier. The 29-years old and his men came under heavy fire by insurgents. One soldier was hit and suffered a serious gunshot wound. At the risk of his life, Knoska charged into hostile fire to rescue the man. A bullet struck his life-saving helmet. The example he set motivated his soldiers. Together they rescued the wounded trooper. Knoska is a member of Light Infantry Regiment 1, a combat unit of the Army.
