COMMENT While the first series production LCA's handover to the Indian Air Force is a notable achievement for the programme, officials cannot deny that it fails to meet the IAF's operational requirements and is, at best, a 'stopgap' induction
The limited 80-85 KN thrust of its engine restricts its weapons load and maneuverability and enters service without an electronic warfare (EW) suite, despite a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announcement on 10 January that one had been successfully tested on the platform
It will also be unable to fire its complement of long-range and beyond visual range missiles, as its weapons suite is still being integrated, or carry out mid-air refueling until after obtaining the FOC
Tyagi's claim that 60% of the LCA's components and systems were indigenously sourced is questioned by many in the IAF, as the fighter's General Electric F404-GE-IN20 engines, weaponry and numerous other elements are imported
The IAF is pinning its hope on the LCA Mk II, which will be powered by the more powerful General Electric GE-414 engine and be ready for series production by 2019-20
