It uses a method known as penetration testing in which access is attempted via the internet and from a computer within the organisation's own offices. The postgraduate course and qualification is being accredited by the University of Glamorgan which specialises in the subject. In the early days of penetration testing companies employed ex-hackers to test their security but increasingly the job is being seen as an important part of the IT industry. Alan Phillips, managing director of 7 Safe Information Security, based in Sawston, Cambs, said: "It's a world first in terms of the standard of education. "The University of Glamorgan already does a lot of work in this area and reflects the fact this kind of work is becoming a genuine profession. "The courses cover every aspect of penetrative testing and deal with practical exercises and the theory. As a company we've taught hundreds of people and we also carry out our own penetration testing. "We find that in 60 per cent of the time, when people tell us their system is secure, it actually isn't. The job is essentially that of an auditor - to go in and see how secure a system is." The course offers participants a postgraduate certificate in penetration testing. The information security firm was set up in 2001 and employs 10 people. Its clients span the public and private sector both in the UK and abroad. Mr Phillips added: "Hacking used to have an image of a geek with spots in a bedroom doing it for fun. "The people doing it today are much more likely to be working for organised crime. "There's no greater motivation than that of money, so systems have to be secure." CEN
