The Indian Air Force (IAF) is in negotiations with BAE Systems to weaponise its fleet of Hawk Mk 132 advanced jet trainers (AJTs) so they could be deployed on strike co-ordinated armed reconnaissance and close air support missions

BAE Systems officials told IHS Jane's at Aero India 2015 that the IAF is evaluating the feasibility of integrating its largely licence-built Hawk Mk 132s with a range of weapon systems that are fitted onto its SEPECAT Jaguar fighters

India's decision on whether to procure 126 Dassault Rafale fighters for its Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) requirement will be taken by early next month, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said in Bangalore on 18 February.

"The outcome of the Rafale deal will be known only after the Cost Negotiation Committee [CNC], dealing with the purchase, submits its progress report to the Ministry of Defence [MoD]," Parrikar told reporters at Aero India 2015.

Aero India 2015: Modi pledges to improve India's offset policy

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has outlined a commitment to improve the country's defence offset policy as a tool to modernise the indigenous defence industrial base

Speaking at Aero India 2015 on 18 February, Modi said enhancements to the offset policy would be sought through feedback from foreign and local industry. The updated offset policy is likely to be included in India's new Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), which is expected to be published later this year

A Rafael official has confirmed that the Spice 250 lightweight standoff glide bomb has been purchased by an international customer.

Speaking at Aero India 2015 in Bangalore, Eran Peleg, head of business development for air-to-surface weapons at the Israeli company, confirmed that a contract with a foreign country had been signed for the missile system, which was unveiled at the 2013 Paris Airshow. He declined to provide further details.

Spice 250 is the latest member of a family of glide weapons that includes the original Spice 2000 and the Spice 1000 first shown in 2005. Rafael's development of the 250 kg version - of which 80-90 kg is the warhead - was in large part based on its work on the earlier weapons and Israeli Air Force (IAF) combat experience.

BEL Wins COMPASS Order From Elbit Systems At Aero India

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has won a contract at Aero India 2015 from Elbit Systems for the production of Elop’s Compact Multi-Purpose Advanced Stabilized Systems (CoMPASSTM)

This is in addition to an earlier order for the supply of CoMPASS, received by BEL from Elop in 2014

Previously, BEL had entered into a Technical Collaboration Agreement with Elop for the joint production and D-Level maintenance of CoMPASS for the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Programme. BEL had absorbed transfer of technology (ToT) for production of CoMPASS in India. CoMPASS is used in the ALH being manufactured by HAL.

The CoMPASS is a day-and-night surveillance system that includes a colour TV daylight camera, 3rd Generation 3-5 µm Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) sensor, Laser Target Designator and Range Finder (LTDRF) and automatic tracking capabilities, as well as command and control capabilities. It is distinguished by a wide variety of interfaces, enabling integration with various aircraft / helicopter systems, such as Mission Computer, fire control, radar, GPS, data downlink and helmet-mounted tracking systems. Its small dimensions, low weight, high level of stabilisation and coverage angles make it an optimal choice for long-range, day-and-night surveillance, target tracking, fire control applications and search and rescue.

CoMPASS is the most advanced payload version of its family, featuring reduced weight, high degree of modularity and flexibility, space-saving packaging and advanced operational and video processing features.

India Increases Serviceability Of Su-30MKI, Other Fighter Aircraft

India has increased serviceability of the existing Fighter aircraft to deal with a shortfall in aircraft availability, Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar said during Aero India 2015.

The minister was responding to questions as to whether India would purchase additional Su-30MKI fighter aircraft due to a delay in acquisition of the Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA).

The minister did not name the aircraft although it is clear that he was referring to Su-30MKI and Mirage-2000 aircraft that are in operation with the IAF. About 40 percent of the overall aircrafts are not available for operations due to overhaul and maintenance issues; India is hoping to increase the number of aircrafts available in operation by increasing their serviceability.

India’s Fighter fleet consists of Su-30MKI, Mirage-2000, MiG-29 and older MiG-21 to 27.

Indian defense minister, Manohar Parrikar made it abundantly clear today that Dassault Rafale is very much in the reckoning in the Indian MMRCA contract during a press briefing at Aero India 2015 Airshow.

Decision on the French fighter plane Rafale acquisition will have to wait till March for the Contract Negotiation Committee (CNC) final report, Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar said.

"I am waiting the CNC report and until the detailed report is submitted, I will be unable to comment on the MMRCA aircraft acquisition. I have asked the CNC to expedite the report. The report is expected in March if not February. It is essential for the ministry to make a final decision about the deal,” Parrikar said.

Today’s assertion by the Indian minister lays to rest speculation in various media that the deal could be abandoned due to insurmountable differences between the Indian and French sides.

Aero India 2015: New UAC chief bullish on fifth-gen fighter progress

New United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) CEO Yuri Slyusar is confident that Russia and India will sign a contract for the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) in 2015

“Rosoboronexport [Russia’s defence export body] is in the final stage of negotiations for the FGFA contract,” Slyusar said on 19 February at Aero India 2015. “We think there is a possibility to sign the agreement within 2015. At least the Russian side thinks it will be done in 2015”

Slyusar, a deputy minister of Industry and Trade who replaced Mikhail Pogosian on 15 January, said that the two sides had signed preliminary and detailed design contracts for the FGFA programme, which is based on the Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA fighter due to enter Russian Air Force service. “The level of co-operation we have with India [on this programme] is something we don’t have with any other country,” he added

Pressed for details, he said that the workshare between the two countries on the FGFA was still the subject of negotiations, but “when we can tell you we will tell you” how the programme will be split between UAC and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-HAL
