Amid the chaos, Syrian President Bashar Assad marks 48th birthday
Syria may be in chaos, and the international community may be floundering for
the proper response to the regime’s chemical weapons attack outside Damascus,
but President Bashar Assad is celebrating — his birthday, that is.
The beleaguered ruler turned 48 years old Wednesday, the same day America
mourned and marked the 12th anniversary of the Sept.11, 2001, terror attacks
on U.S. soil, as well as the first-year memorial of the Sept. 11, 2012, terror attacks
on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
Mr. Assad tweeted a joke: “I want to thank all 2 people who wished me a happy
birthday! (my cat and the maid)#AssadBirthday.”
Not all social media posters spoke kindly.
One tweeted: “Today (Syria’s time) is Assad’s birthday. How many candles does
the cake have? His age or the number of ppl he slaughtered?”
And another, noting the somber day elsewhere in the world: “It’s an unfortunate
soul whose birthday falls on such a notorious day. Somehow, though, Syrian
President Bashar Assad marking his 48th birthday on September 11 seems at
minimum ironic.”
