חיזבאללה: יוניפיל בדרום תחת חסותנו

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem told Nahar As-Shabab on Thursday that UNIFIL forces cannot operate in a safe environment in South Lebanon without his party’s approval.
However, “there are no problems between Hezbollah and the peacekeeping forces, and the party will take the necessary measures to confirm this issue,” he said.
Qassem also said that Hezbollah’s coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) is “permanent,” adding that his party is sharing information with LAF officials with regard to Israeli spy networks in Lebanon.
He added that the cooperation with the Internal Security Forces’ Information Branch is also permanent, “despite the branch’s political affiliation,” a reference to Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri’s alleged support for it.
Qassem also dismissed the possibility of meeting with prominent majority figures, such as head of the Lebanese Forces Executive Council Samir Geagea, National Bloc leader Carlos Eddé and Kataeb Party MP Sami Gemayel, and said that “there is nothing to discuss with them.”
“If they changed their intense political rhetoric and stopped attacking Hezbollah, we might meet with them,” he told the paper.
On the relations between Hezbollah and Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, Qassem said they are “ordinary but lack warmth,” because relations depend on political stances, adding that former minister Wadih al-Khazen carried the role of mediator between the party and the Patriarchy.
“We do not create any obstacles. We hope that we will get closer” to the patriarch “when we share similar stances,” he said.
