Raytheon Company successfully fired two Pike 40 mm precision-guided munitions from a standard tube grenade launcher during flight tests at Mile High Resources in Texas. Both rounds landed within the targeted impact area after flying more than 2,300 yards. (2.1 km). Weighing less than two pounds and measuring just 16.8 inches (42.6 cm) in length, Pike can be fired from a conventional, single-shot grenade launcher such as the M320 or EGLM (Enhanced Grenade Launching Module). The maximum range of M320 grenade launcher is 437 Yards-350 meters

Smith, Raytheon’s Advanced Land Warfare Systems director. “This new guided munition can provide the warfighter with precision, extended-range capability never before seen in a hand-held weapon on the battlefield. Pike will become smarter and smarter as we continue to develop its capabilities,” said Smith. “In the current configuration, the warfighter will enter programmable laser codes prior to loading Pike into its launcher. Spiral development calls for multiple-round simultaneous programming and targeting with data link capabilities.”

Additional Pike upgrades include the ability to fire it from platform-mounted launchers on small boats, all-terrain vehicles and small unmanned aircraft systems. The missile will extend the effective range of grenade launchers currently reaching 1,600 yards (1.5 km) using ballistic computing sights.

ביחידות מיוחדות בהן קומפקטיות וזריזות הן דרישה מבצעית קריטית, ישנה העדפה גורפת לנשק קטן וקל. כבר לפני עשור ראינו יחידות של צבא ארה"ב שהחזירו לשימוש מטולי M-79 עתיקים מתקופת מלחמת וייטנאם כתחליף למטול M203. בשנות ה-90 נעשה ניסיון להשתמש ברובה ציד לפרצת דלתות מחובר ל-M4, שכונה "מפתח מאסטר" (MasterKey), הוא נעלם תוך מספר שנים והוחלף ברובה נפרד.

לדעתי הטיל החדש לא יחליף אף אחד מהכלים עליהם שאלת, כי גודל הרש"ק בשלושתם שונה ולכן רלוונטי למשימות שונות.

BAE Systems to Showcase a New Light Tank for US Army.

BAE Systems will showcase a full range of technologies and solutions at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C., October 12-14, 2015.

Media representatives are invited to visit the company’s exhibit to learn how BAE Systems is meeting complex U.S. Army challenges. Featured products and services will include combat vehicles, precision-guided munitions, advanced electronics, and imaging and mapping technologies.

During the event, the company will conduct media briefings on significant programs and capabilities. Briefings currently scheduled are: BAE Systems will exhibit a solution to meet the U.S. Army’s proposed requirement for a Mobile Protected Firepower capability, which would involve an expeditionary light tank that could be air-dropped from a C-130 aircraft. The company’s solution is based on the purpose-built M8 Armored Gun System, modernized with mature technologies from the CV90 family of infantry fighting vehicles and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

AUSA 2015: Army defends high cost for up-gunned Stryker

US Congress defence committee leaders agreed to authorize USD411 million to add heavier weapons to 81 of the US Army's Stryker wheeled personnel carriers in fiscal year 2016, and army acquisition officials defended that high per-system cost as necessary for a small and rapid procurement.

The army is working to up-gun 81 Strykers with 30 mm cannons on remote weapon systems and others with Javelin anti-tank missiles, a long-considered upgrade that was pushed through an operational need statement from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment based at Vilseck in Germany. Service leaders approved the plan in April and now testing and integration work remains.

The cost per system appears particularly high (about USD5 million per vehicle), and according to Heidi Shyu, the army's acquisition executive, this is partly schedule driven because it is through an urgent need statement that is seeking the upgrade as soon as possible. It is also for only 81 systems, so the limited quantity drives up per-unit costs. The price includes a design and integration element as well, she added.

These lethality upgrades are not for the heavier armoured Stryker Double-V Hull (DVH) vehicles, and rather are for the original flat-bottom configuration, although a Stryker engineering change proposal (ECP) effort may eventually include a 30 mm weapon for the DVH, Shyu said. "If we want more Strykers to have this capability beyond the 81 [requested in Europe], we will start a programme of record to do that," she said, noting that the cost could be lower with a procurement of thousands of units.

AUSA 2015: Refined XM25 go for launch

Budget uncertainty in the US is unlikely to delay the introduction of the army’s long-awaited smart grenade launcher, industry officials have said.

The XM25 weapon system – which is designed to fire air burst rounds to defeat targets behind cover – is expected to go through its Pre-Production Qualification Test (PPQT) next spring with a Milestone C decision expected in August 2016.

The direct-fire weapon is meant to be shoulder-fired allowing a soldier to use basic rifleman marksmanship skills.

At present, the weapon system is in the second round of contractor validation testing.

Three companies are currently involved in producing the XM25, including Orbital ATK for integration and the 25mm ammunition, L-3 for the fire control system and H&K, which manufacturers the rifle itself

AUSA 2015: Abrams SEPv3 upgrade tested

A third upgrade package for the M1A2 Abrams main battle tank (MBT) is being assessed by the US Army.

At the AUSA exhibition in Washington DC, a spokesperson from General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), which is providing the upgrade, told Shephard that the testing started in September and would continue for about 18-24 months.

A production contract is expected to follow in the late-2017 timeframe.

The US Army will test the MBTs fitted with the System Enhancement Package version 3 (SEPv3) package that includes an update to the electronics to allow faster data rates. The spokesperson said that this will upgrade the system from 2005 electronics to 2015 electronics.

He added that it will also include moving the inertial navigation system from the hull to the turret to improve accuracy, and putting the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) under armour to provide a silent over watch capability. It means that electronic systems can run on the APU batteries instead of having the engine running whilst stationary.

An ammunition data link will also be provided to allow for more ammunition variants to be fired, particularly air-burst rounds. The monitors will be upgraded to 1080 screens in preparation to support the GEN 3 FLIR thermal sights.

Overall the upgrade will prepare the tank to support future lethality improvements expected in the near future. Maintenance will move from LRU back to LRM, which means that mechanics can change cards within the electronic systems rather than replacing an entire unit.

GDLS is currently installing the SEPv2 upgrade package.

To improve size, weight and power, GDLS is proposing installing a 1,120kW MTU 12V 883 diesel engine and Allison transmission to replace the current Honeywell turbine. According to GDLS, this would reduce running costs by 14%.

Rheinmetall introduces Vingmate MR 500

Rheinmetall has developed a new fire control device for low- and medium-velocity 40mm grenade launchers and shoulder launched rockets, the company announced on 12 October.

The Vingmate MR 500 is a manually-adjusted clip-on aiming system that weighs 11 ounces and incorporates an infrared target marker and illuminator. The fire control device is powered by a CR123 battery and is suitable for both left-handed and right-handed shooters. It has a customisable user interface and is capable of supporting future extended-range munitions and airburst/counter-defilade warheads.

The MR 500 can be used with both standalone and underslung grenade launchers. The system also has the ability to store 32 ballistic tables, two of which can be selected using a dedicated switch. It can communicate with Rheinmetall's rifle-mounted TAC-Ray clip-on laser rangefinder.

According to the company, the device meets the current and future requirements for the US Army's M320 40mm grenade launcher module.

NAMMO receives SMAW ammo order

The US army has issued a $42.7 million delivery order to NAMMO for Shoulder launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon (SMAW) ammunition, the company announced on 12 October.


Under the delivery order, NAMMO will provide SMAW Common Practice Rocket (CPR) ammunition to the US Marine Corps (USMC).

The army placed the order against the USMC's five year IDIQ contract for SMAW. The IDIQ contract, announced in September, has potential for deliveries of three types of 83mm SMAW ammunition.

The contract is being managed by the US Army Single Manager for Conventional Ammunition (SMCA) based at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey.

AUSA 2015: Rafael Showcasing New Products

Rafael is displaying its TROPHY-LV active protection system on an Oshkosh M-ATV. This light version of the TROPHY APS is a lighter derivative of TROPHY HV, the world's only combat-proven APS for armored vehicles. AUSA 2015: Navistar to Provide 2,293 MTVs to ANSF

The US Army Contracting Command has awarded Navistar Defense a $369 million contract to provide 2,293 Medium Tactical Vehicles (MTVs) to build upon the Afghanistan National Security Force's (ANSF) MTV Fleet. Production will commence immediately, with deliveries starting in January 2016 and concluding in 2019

"We are honored to continue supporting the efforts of the Afghanistan National Security Force's missions to provide security and rebuilding in their country," said Kevin Thomas, president, Navistar Defense. "We have been supporting ANSF since 2005 and have provided more than 9,000 medium-duty vehicles to the Afghan forces during that time."

Under the contract, Navistar Defense will provide general troop transport vehicles, water and fuel tankers, ammunition trucks, and wreckers as well as a number of trucks with armored cabs. This fleet is based on the International WorkStar/7000-MV severe service vocational truck platform.

The CZ 806 is the second generation of the CZ 805 introduced into ACR service in 2010 and it incorporates several improvements. The new rifle has significant mechanical differences to the earlier rifle, such as a new simplified three-position gas system, a non-reciprocating charging handle, and a hold-open catch for the bolt carrier.

It is also about 0.5 kg lighter and has other ergonomic improvements such as improved balance and a new foldable telescopic stock. It also has an enlarged fire selector (single and automatic fire - dropping the two-round burst of the CZ 805), a magazine release lever, and all of its controls are ambidextrous. These improvements have been introduced following ACR combat experience with the CZ 805.

Like the older version the CZ 806 comes in two variants, the A1 rifle and a short-barreled A2 carbine. Both are chambered in the standard 5.56x45 mm NATO round.

To date the ACR has bought over 17,000 CZ 805 A1/A2s under two contracts signed in 2010 and 2013. By December these should have completely replaced the old VZ-58 (AK-47) in ACR service. Slovakia and the Mexican Federal Police also use the CZ 805

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has been awarded a full-rate production contract by the US Army for 19 MQ-1C Improved Gray Eagle (IGE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to be delivered by September 2018, the company announced on 14 October during the Association of the United States Army's (AUSA) annual conference in Washington, DC.

IGE, developed by GA-ASI using internal research and development (IRAD) funds, has larger fuel tanks for longer persistence, Colonel Courtney Cote, project manager for unmanned aircraft systems at the army's programme executive office for aviation, said during a 13 October press briefing at the conference.

Col Cote added that the new variant will be operated by United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM). Due to many hardware and software commonalities with the baseline Gray Eagle, IGE can, however, be based and maintained with the existing fleet, according to a GA-ASI press statement. In addition to increased endurance, the IGE features a variety of sensor and weapons payloads, according to GA-ASI.

Attendees at AUSA also got a first look at Oshkosh Defense’s bigger, badder mine-resistant all terrain vehicle: the MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle 6 X 6 technology demonstrator. MRAP stands for mine resistant ambush protected. The heavy armored vehicles were developed in response to roadside bombs and other improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that were killing and maiming U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan who were riding in lightly armored vehicles like the Humvee.The 42,000-pound, six-wheeled vehicle builds on the technology of Oshkosh Defense four-wheeled M-ATVs. The 6 X 6 has two hatches in the rear and on passenger’s side and can seat 15 soldiers. Overall the big rig can carry an additional 12,000 pounds of payload above its own 42,000-pound weight. It also comes with all-wheel steer to enhance maneuverability.

The 6 X 6 can his a top speed of 70 miles per hour and has a range of 300 miles.

Possible missions could include troop transport, explosive ordnance disposal or command and control.

Northrop Releases the Hellhound at AUSA

WASHINGTON — Northrop Grumman unveiled its six-passenger Hellhound Light Reconnaissance Vehicle prototype at the Association of the US Army exhibition today.

The vehicle was designed from the ground up with the crew and mission in mind so that it could be used by light infantry, border police, National Guard or first responders, Pat Murray, Northrop’s business development director for mission solutions and readiness, said at the unveiling.

This particular variant is designed for the US Army’s light reconnaissance vehicle acquisition program, something the service says it’s serious about acquiring in the near term as part of its Combat Vehicle Modernization Strategy that it rolled out at AUSA.

Hellhound addresses multiple Army war-fighting challenges faced by land forces today [and is] designed to maximize off-road capability to regain the advantage of maneuver and provide protection through speed and agility, protection for things like roadside bombs or IEDs,” Murray said.

Another challenge the vehicle seeks to address is delivering more on-board power, she added.

“The power demand has grown to the point where current ground vehicle energy systems do not meet the needs.”

Northrop is using a modular energy system in the vehicle from German company JENOPTIK, which produces systems capable of generating 100 kilowatts of “exportable, stable power,” Jeff Wood, Northrop’s director of vehicle modernization, said.

“To jump to 100 kilowatts opens new opportunities that we are beginning to explore,” he said, such as “directed energy weapons that we would once only see in Star Trek are now quite possible.”

The power will “open new opportunities in powering expeditionary command post or key infrastructure as part of disaster response teams,” Wood said, and allows for new and more powerful sensor suites in the vehicle.

The vehicle at the show was also equipped with a large ATK M230 LF 30mm cannon mounted on an EOS R400 weapon station. The weapon “provides light vehicles with unprecedented access to firepower normally reserved for much heavier vehicles,” Wood said.
