In 1984, the Egyptian Armed Forces made a decision to hold a competition to upgrade their T-54s to enhance their combat capabilities to match those of the American M60A3 - one of the goals of such modification was to maximise the commonality of the Egyptian T-54 and M60 that the Egyptian Army had started to use.
One of the companies that entered the competition was the General Products Division of the Teledyne Continental. Their work resulted in the Rameses tank.
The Rameses inherited only the hull and the turret from the T-54 . The running gear, engine, gun, equipment and fire control system were replaced with their American variants. The T-54 tank was equipped with the improved AVDS-1790-5A diesel engine derived from the M60A3's AVDS-1790-2C engine and TSM-304 hydromechanical transmission - a license-built version of the West German RK 304. The increase in the hull internal capacity achieved through lengthening the hull enabled the internal fuel cells to accommodate almost the double amount of fuel from 812 litres to 1,312 litres . A HTL Industries fire-suppressant system was installed in the engine compartment. The suspension was radically modified as Teledyne's engineers replaced torsion bars with hydropneumatic shock absorbers, five large-diameter road wheels were substituted for six smaller ones and three track support rollers. The Belgian SABCA Titan Mk I fire control system which included a monocular night vision device and a telescopic sight integrated with the laser rangefinder, a digital ballistic computer, atmospheric wind sensors, temperature and pressure sensors, as well as the turret traverse angle indicator was fitted. The American M68 105mm rifled main armament replaced the DT-10T 100mm gun.
A single T-54 was retrofitted into the Rameses variant in the United States in 1985-1986. It was unveiled at the Cairo International military exhibition in November 1987. Because of high cost of retrofitting the existing vehicles into the Rameses the Egyptians cancelled the upgrading.
