Israeli company develops new mortar bomb

Israel Aircraft Industries' (IAI's) MBT Missiles Division is developing, as a private venture, a 120mm laser-guided mortar bomb (LGMB), dubbed 'Fireball'.

The system is fitted with a global positioning system (GPS) receiver and a nose-mounted laser homing seeker. It is designed for use in conjunction with existing ground- and air-based laser designators now being deployed in increasing numbers.

The bomb is stabilised in flight by fins which extend after launch. Four control surfaces mounted near the nose also provide lift to enable targets to be engaged well beyond the range of conventional mortar bombs.

The range of the Fireball LGMB depends on a number of factors, such as the type of 120mm smoothbore mortar used. Minimum range is quoted as about 1km; the maximum range, when fired from mortars such as the US M120/M121, is 15km.

When used in the laser-designated mode, it is expected that a circular error of probability (CEP) of 1m would be achieved. Using GPS, the CEP would be about 30m.

It is understood that the Fireball LGMB has been under development for several years but no all-up round has yet been test fired. At this stage, no details of the warhead fitted to Fireball have been released, although it is expected to include high-explosive (HE) or submunition.

Mortars have traditionally been used to provide fire support for infantry units firing HE, smoke and illuminating projectiles. More recently, mortar bombs containing submunitions that attack the vulnerable upper surfaces of armoured vehicles have been developed and are now in production. These are also highly effective against troops in the open.

While mortars are generically area weapons, there is now an increasing requirement for a more surgical or precision-attack capability. The introduction of an LGMB such as Fireball would enable targets to be engaged with one shot. That would have a significant impact on the logistics chain because fewer mortar bombs would be required to neutralise a given target.

Israel reveals mortar bomb

Israel Military Industries (IMI) recently unveiled a new 120mm Laser-Guided Mortar Bomb (LGMB), compatible with all known towed or self-propelled 120mm mortars and all laser designators.

The LGMB has a range of 10.5km and is "designed for both conventional battlefield and urban warfare, providing high precision and minimal collateral damage", according to IMI.

"There is growing demand for precision-guided mortars, especially in the European market. However, until today, the main impediment was the high cost of existing LGMBs, which is almost equal to that of guided missiles, thus negating the advantages of mortar [rounds, which are] supposed to be dispensable," Yossi Aviram, marketing director for IMI, told JDW. "Therefore, we have set a target price of $7,000 in developing our LGMB, which is highly competitive to the two existing LGMBs developed in the US and Sweden. We have been developing the LGMB for the last three years, completing the phase of laboratory testing."

The LGMB is equipped with a nose-mounted passive laser homing seeker, designed for use in conjunction with existing ground and air-based laser designators.

"We have tested several different off-the-shelf seekers in our LGMB, recognising that the existing technology requires no further development," said Aviram, who would not disclose the identity of the seekers' manufacturers.

"Our investment was in developing the guidance system, dubbed 'Pure Heart', which comprises a signal processor unit and four controlled canards that are deployed in the final trajectory stage, directing the bomb's glide to the target."

The infra-red seeker needs to recognise the designated target about 10 seconds before impact, at an altitude of 2-3km, to guide it effectively. Only then are the navigation surfaces deployed, providing 1-2m circular error of probability, according to IMI.

The 13kg LGMB is equipped with a high-explosive warhead, but IMI affirms that "a wide range of warheads could be deployed, making the LGMB suitable for infantry, armoured and fortified targets. Its accuracy will enable a lighter logistical burden, as fewer bombs are required to suppress a target".

Aviram added: "It is a product designed for modern armies, which requires precision munitions. I can say we have at least two potential customers for the LGMB in Europe."
